Big Black – Noise Against the Mainstream

Early 80s: cock rock and hair metal rule the stadiums. While Scorpions and company rake in millions, young Steve Albini from Pasadena is fuming with disgust. Enough with leather-pants poses – in 1982 he forms Big Black with Santiago Durango. A year later Dave Riley joins, and a drum machine replaces the drummer. The lineup alone makes it clear: this band plays by different rules.

Big Black sound like a symphony of razor blades, power tools, and dentist drills. Instead of glamour: cold, brutal guitars. Instead of love songs: lyrics about perversion, violence, and societal decay, often ripped straight from newspaper headlines. Albini spits and snarls the words – anti-singing, anti-idol, anti-rock’n’roll.

In 1986 their debut Atomizer hits like a bomb. Underground zines cheer, listeners waver between shock and fascination. Big Black become the embodiment of a new stance: uncompromisingly independent, ugly yet beautiful, alternative in the truest sense.

Albini remains the restless mastermind, later building his own studio and producing Nirvana and the Pixies – but Big Black was his first loud declaration of war against a rock world badly in need of a slap in the face.

Two Gallants

...are known for their storytelling style, weaving tales of love, pain, loss, hope, and messed-up relationships, all wrapped in a raw, bluesy sound.

Some bands really do start at the very bottom – Two Gallants are living proof. Adam Stephens and Tyson Vogel have known each other since kindergarten (legend has it, after a fistfight). Later came guitar and drums, a string of failed teenage bands – until 2002.

The name? Pure style by chance: both were reading James Joyce’s Dubliners – one of the stories is called Two Gallants. Perfect for two kids kicking off at bus stops in San Francisco, clawing their way up through bars, galleries, and clubs.

2004 brought the breakthrough: The Throes. A raw, gripping debut full of dark tales and wild energy that electrified the scene and earned them their first die-hard fans. From then on, it was nonstop touring across the U.S., with live shows no one forgot.

2006 followed with What The Toll Tells – their masterpiece somewhere between Dylan, Cash, and Guns ’n’ Roses. With Saddle Creek backing them, they hit Europe’s indie scene like a bomb. Next came the quieter EP The Scenery Of Farewell (2007), a few solo detours – and a comeback in 2011.

Finally, in 2012: album number four, The Bloom And The Blight.

Primus – Carnival chaos and a bass gone wild

Primus hail from the Bay Area, where the Golden Gate and Alcatraz set the backdrop. In the early ’90s, just as heavy music was becoming MTV-friendly, Les Claypool (bass), Larry “Ler” LaLonde (guitar), and Tim “Herb” Alexander (drums) crawled out of the underground with a sound no one could quite pin down. Slap bass, carnival melodies, pounding drums, and Claypool’s nasal vocals – or as Les himself put it: “psychedelic polka.”

Before the fame, they paid their dues in sweaty little clubs. Their first record, Suck On This (1989), was literally a live tape from San Francisco – raw, scrappy, and fronted by a cover featuring a clay figurine with a baby bottle. Weird, memorable, totally Primus.

The real breakthrough came in 1990 with the studio debut Frizzle Fry. Here, the madness found its form. Tracks like “Too Many Puppies” turned into anthems for early-’90s alternative kids and lit up club dance floors across the country. Loud, playful, unapologetically odd – Frizzle Fry was the moment Primus stopped being a local curiosity and became a full-blown force in the alternative circus.

Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. – Simon & Garfunkel’s sleepy start

Back in 1953, Paul Simon (dressed as a rabbit) and Art Garfunkel (the Cheshire Cat) met during a school production of Alice in Wonderland in Queens. Their first steps as Tom & Jerry brought the teen hit “Hey Schoolgirl” (1957) – basically an Everly Brothers knock-off, but a start nonetheless.

On October 19, 1964, their debut album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. dropped on Columbia Records, recorded earlier that March. It featured Paul’s first original songs alongside folk standards, boldly advertised as “exciting new sounds in the folk tradition.” In reality? A commercial flop that almost no one noticed.

Still, the acoustic version of “The Sound of Silence” was already hiding there. While Art continued his studies, Paul fled to London, cut The Paul Simon Songbook in just one hour for £60 – including future classics like “I Am a Rock” and “Homeward Bound.

The turning point came in 1965, when producer Tom Wilson decided to electrify “The Sound of Silence” with guitar and drums. Released without the duo’s approval, it shot straight to No. 1. Suddenly, their once-ignored debut climbed back into the Billboard charts in 1966, peaking at No. 30. What started as a flop became the launchpad for a legendary career.

💀 Yes, we’ve got audio skeletons in the closet.

Just a heads-up:

some of our past streams on Zap.stream are
well, kinda empty, broken, or just weird.

Why?

Because the delete button has gone missing. Seriously – if you know where it is, hit us up.

Until then: don’t be alarmed, just scroll on. The good stuff is on its way.

💀 Audioleichen im Keller? Haben wir auch.

Kleiner Hinweis in eigener Sache:

Manche unserer alten Streams auf Zap.stream sind
 sagen wir mal
nicht mehr ganz lebendig. Leer, abgebrochen oder einfach nur merkwĂŒrdig. Warum?

Weil der Delete-Button gerade vermisst wird – ernsthaft, wenn jemand weiß, wo er ist: Meldet euch!

Bis dahin: Nicht wundern, einfach drĂŒberhören. Der gute Kram kommt noch.
