Ideally each set you should feel like you had 1 or 2 more reps left in the tank.
Most beginners don't know how that feels, so with that 40 lbs, go as many reps as you possibly can, to gauge what approaching muscular failure is, then adjust your working weight until you feel roughly that in your last two sets

Would recommend that you don't double the weight for your final set.
