But a glaring example: almost all fediverse instances are operated by what’s essentially autocrats: server admins. Only in very few (like social.coop where I am) do the governed have a say in the rule making.

Many like to drink 20 oz sugar drinks, too. And if one fast food chain were to stop offering them, I'm sure that some percentage of customers will leave and go to some other fast food chain that has them.

So the study proves only the patently obvious.

The difference is: the fast food chain has other options. Like water. Big social usually does not.

I made a similar point in an interview with the Mercury News a couple of weeks ago: first, let's figure out what the *right* thing is here -- because we don't know -- , and then what rules we need to get there. Because machines reading all textbooks, movies etc is a genuinely new thing, likely requiring new approaches to regulation.
