"“The population may be getting younger because individuals born after 2008, the year a marine sanctuary was introduced off the west coast of the North Island, have better chances of survival, since they are less likely to be accidentally caught in fishing nets,” suggests Professor Rochelle Constantine."

What a dickhead.
Encouraging people to learn Te Reo and basic history is not political.

I didn't like it when I first heard it too.
Reckoner has a special meaning for me for a particular group at new years, one of whom passed away a few years later.

nostr:npub1hykucplphuhelaxutcw4jw3vuu7gcg42czhqmk7jhchs8vdga4fsj73p33 I always enjoy Cory's writing, but I don't think the way he's written about black spruce is entirely accurate.
I'm a restoration ecologist with no first hand experience in this particular ecosystem, but here's a bit of what I've read matched with experience in other forest restoration projects.
"Black spruce dominates most spruce-fir ecosystems of boreal North America."
Basically, it's exactly what you should be planting in these areas after logging.

Drug addiction is a mental health issue. Punishing people for struggling with their mental health is abhorrent.
"Drug addicts will face the prospect of losing their benefit if they refuse treatment or don't make efforts to find work, the ACT Party leader says."
Lax dog and cat breeding laws just means a lot more dead cats, dogs and wildlife.
Great that SPCA is taking a science led approach now as we lost decades of progress from their previous stance.
"Auckland Council said a lack of de-sexing during Covid and irresponsible owners has caused an explosion of roaming dogs and they urgently need government support to get on top of the numbers."

I have successfully used LIDAR to delineate emergent podocarps in QGIS. Ā great tool for finding big trees in hard to access places.
I'm really keen to see what you both come up with.
I know lots of work happening by Regional Councils to quantify indigenous vegetation cover for the NPS-IB as well.

nostr:npub1xes9xt8aw0lzfy0efa6eq30k9sjx5yac50fgfuu6l6ryl80vfdyqjxsfk6 I do wonder about New Zealand. I'm assuming stoats, possums and rats would be high on our list but my bet for biodiversity loss "winner" would be invasive wasps. Likely there is no data but I'd love to see anything on the effect of those species on endemic insects.
nostr:npub1vj87ylm8hqpk7vpzkdy92hm42nyvc7t5jt3jewxtypucmwsy45es9nat8n I'm more worried about ecological weeds than invasive animals tbh. Much harder to control.
Invasive species a growing and costly threat worldwide, key report to find

I'm sure you can find an article to read if you don't want to listen to a podcast.
I had to read this a few times to figure out the "young" person in this article is a 35 year old man.
Blindboy has a great podcast where he talks about the infantilisation of middle aged adults as a symptom of a society that has failed to provide for it's adult population compared with older generations. It's a great listen.

Other insect taxa, such as native bees, did not colonise the impact roof but were present on the green roof reference site, which was lower in height and planted with native plants."
This part is important. We need techniques that support indigenous biodiversity and ecosystem function, not exotic species.
"Our assessment covers the main biotic and abiotic factors which explain the probability of native tree establishment. These factors are mean annual rainfall, mean annual air temperature, proximity and composition of adjacent seed sources, landform type, slope aspect, slope, topographic exposure, and the presence of existing woody cover."
