Another way to looking at it:
If we accept that B0 (the base year) is 1900 with a spawning stock biomass (SSB) of 300,000 tonnes, the current SSB of 170,000 tonnes puts the stock status at 57%.
The target for most fisheries is 40%.
The big question is what year to call B0 as Hauraki Gulf snapper were supporting humans for many centuries before 1900.

We first trialled cardboard plant guards back in 2019 and haven't looked back.
True that they only last a couple of seasons at best but the ability to biodegrade is a huge asset.
These plastics guards were used by contractors for a planting in 2016. Seven years later they're still there and now it's up to us a volunteers to remove them.

We need to be very careful that so-called green solutions don't end up causing more problems than they solve. The arguments against seabed mining are the same arguments against offshore wind, with the addition of potentially significant impacts on seabirds.

Aquaculture has consistently underperformed in terms of growth forecasts for at least the last decade.
Wild caught fisheries can't grow in volume because they're at capacity and so aquaculture has always been hyped as a growth area.

I was shifting some stuff around in the garage today and saw that the plastic in my dive fins has perished and cracked.
At first I was disappointed but I bought them 16 years ago so not too bad I guess.
The stock status as a proportion of the unfished biomass is an an important and useful number, but perhaps we could use the most up to date figures, and perhaps we could also mention that the Hauraki Gulf snapper population increased 486% between 1988 and 2022?

nostr:npub1f24k5rx8carlrkmdjt3tkughjh0xpg58f5q7xlet8mck2uyxwm2scg32ar The last new marine reserves were created in 2014.
Since then, the conversation with mana whenua has changed a lot, hence why you see "highly protected areas" that still allow customary fishing rather than full no-take marine reserves.
Ko au ko te taiao, ko te taiao ko au – I am the environment and the environment is me is a world view that requires a level of engagement with the environment that isn't possible in a no-take marine reserve.

I'm Aotearoa New Zealand the incentive is to low-ball to get the contract and then add extra costs in later.
No accountability and by then everyone is in too deep to pull out.

"The report said the maximum price the government would pay was set too low and the project's bidders soon worked this out.
That decision meant proposals were "value managed down" or made cheaper on designs and timelines to make costs look acceptable.
"These value management changes represented risks that would eventually manifest themselves after procurement once construction commenced," it read."

Federal government is absolutely addicted to consultants, this looks like a phenomenal waste of money. Surely there are suppliers with relevant expertise in this space???

As someone responsible for assessing and putting in place SNAs I am more than a little bemused by this concern from academia.
None of this is new, SNA classifications have been required since 1991.
