Guns, Guns and Steel goes into great detail about why certain societies have thrived and others have been conquered. The main takeaway is that geography is probably the main driver.

While useful, this book is explanatory for times when property is largely physical/tangible. It does nothing to explain or even anticipate a time when property is digital. When property is digital, it doesn’t matter who has the horses, who has the gunpowder, and who has the domesticated animals. What matters is whether you possess wealth and influence in the powerful domain which, as Bitcoiners know, is transitioning to cyberspace. Praise Guns, Germs, and Steel for its explanation of the past, but be skeptical of its predictive power going forward.

New people don’t get much engagement because established users don’t follow new people so they leave. They feel like they are talking into the void (because they do). Even commenting on notes doesn’t get you that many followers.

This is why it’s so critical for Nostr to grow or it may very well die. Without new people, the number of users will shrink over time. You need relatively new folks to engage with other relatively new folks because they’re more likely to follow each other and stick around.

Did people disappear from Nostr when bitcoin went down 30%?

So much of a what goes into your karaoke song selection is deciding what part of your personality you would like to share in the moment with the people you are singing with. That being said there are many songs that are just fun to sing - Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver always come to my mind.
