New people don’t get much engagement because established users don’t follow new people so they leave. They feel like they are talking into the void (because they do). Even commenting on notes doesn’t get you that many followers.

This is why it’s so critical for Nostr to grow or it may very well die. Without new people, the number of users will shrink over time. You need relatively new folks to engage with other relatively new folks because they’re more likely to follow each other and stick around.

This is very true.

I just wanted to make sure it wasn't my imagination. I try to be here every day even if I don't have profound things to say or am feeling argumentative.

Most web2 algos give an impression boost to the new users for a reason. It's a cheap trick, but it works.

Current state of having to scream into the void severely flattens the growth rate exponential.

Completely agree with this

Yep!

Use more hash-tags

Not only that but my profile shows I have 2 followers but my notifications show way more so I’m not quite sure what’s going on with it.

Hmm which client?

I use primal and amethyst.

If you use Primal you might be seeing follow bots who follow and unfollow nonstop. You can turn it off in notification settings.

It is indeed primal, would you suggest something different?

Just mute whatever profile keeps fallowing and unfollowing you. It’s the only way.

Go to notification settings and uncheck getting notified when someone follows you

Had the same thing happen to me. Took about a month for things to settle down.

Not sure how this is solved. Not without a way to weed out new bot npubs vs new legitimate users.

Introductions from established users who know they aren't a bot, because they helped them get set up, seems the most effective, but also the hardest to scale, and leaves those who find Nostr on their own out in the cold.

When I first showed it felt like this but soon I realized engagement was key. So I started commenting on notes and commenting to others notes within. This helped me a lot and am now adventuring outside the bitcoin ecosystem, through hashtags and key words. Not sure this helps but it helped me.

I try to post about my interests, my job as a trucker or to just say GM...but, I am not really Mr. Popular! Still, have found new friends on here and do what I can to support FOSS. :)

This is the key. So different than “traditional SM”

And soooooo much better IMO 🙏🏻💓

Thanks for the reminder. Gonna try to step up my game again. I haven’t noticed as many #introductions notes lately. It’s fun to greet and meet. 🤙

As a newbie here, I have just learned that using #introductions is a thing! Thank you! I will DO an intro post. But will also search the hashtag and see who I find.

You did good finding nostr, welcome. You can follow hashtags here as well as search hashtags. It really helps finding people with mutual interests.

Thank you!

Very true👏

I guess I'd say that besides a more built-in algo feed, so I was seeing interesting stuff, what you describe was my experience on Twitter from like 2011 - 2019 or so. And, I don't think I broke 100 followers until a couple years ago. Almost a decade of grind before I really felt like I was a part of it (with much engagement).

Jup and i think most of my <20 followers are bots 🤣

Just be generous with likes

Support small accounts 💪🏼🤙🏼🧡💜

Definitely a cold start problem and mix in various points of friction (like relays being one), and yeah it can make retention tough.

Those would be good opportunities for someone to build on.

isn't this a natural problem with people in general, even offline?

no one who is famous or thinks that they are goes out and talks to a lowly plebeian on the street.

So, all people who came here early think they’re famous?

not all and silly to assume. the early crowd will typically only talk to people who have been around as long as they have.

the new crowd like me will try to engage with those people will hardly get a response. the social dynamics work like the school cafeteria in an elementary school. cool kids, popular kids, in criws, etc.

every single person has to work their way up unless they are already well known when they come here.

I don’t think it’s as much about social dynamics, but more for practical reasons. Once you’ve spent a good amount of time here, you’ve likely already curated a good follow list that’s decent enough to sustain your swiping needs on a daily basis. It’s not perfect but the marginal utility of following more people is lower. You’ll go out of your way for a really interesting person but otherwise it’s unnecessary.

I don’t blame anyone. It’s just how it is.

it is how it is. :)

if we zoom out, x still has a large portion of that population. they are the early crowd, the in crowd that most will want to join.

While I might have been on Nostr longer and have more followers, that's ultimately irrelevant. The real value lies in the content you create.

If it resonates and is "zapable," people will show their appreciation through zaps, comments, boosts, quotes, and likes.

I value the content itself and the genuine interactions it sparks, not just follower counts. My zaps go to those who provide value or have a positive presence, regardless of how many followers they have. #value4value

New Nostriches eager to gain visibility, concentrate on sharing quality content and engaging authentically in conversations.

How many close friends does one has in reality? Good question.

Popularity is a winner take all market. If we really want freedom, this is what it is. Darwinian.

i think i will keep posting here and if i am not posting then i just keep this account. who knows it will come in handy , maybe i can sell some stuff here and get pay by sats.

Totally agree — exactly my experience as someone new to this platform. Completely different from all my previous experiences with other social media.

Bang on 100% true 👍

This hits, like a kick to the 🥜💰

Yeah this is really accurate. I’ve purple pulled a couple people and they’ve all left in short time because it feels like there’s nobody out there. 🤷‍♀️

Unless one has an interest in FOSS, Bitcoin, or Free Speech, nostr will have little draw, until the killer app is discovered.

Yep. Follow me for irreverent humor. 🍆

It does seem like those who recruit to nostr just tell people to 'post' rather than show them how to use it, and show them for specifically how it could help them.

I'm hear to communicate with people in STEM, and learn, but finding people in the sea of the "G M", "P u r e V i d a", and variations of the 'Austrian economics' people takes an amount of patience and persistence that could easily be not worth the effort.
