Keeping the plants stockier does not affect the genetics per se. To make a good selection and really get to know the characteristics of the female as well as male parent, it is generally recommended to cultivate these genetics through several cycles.
However, if you do not take cuttings (clones) from the plants, I would not try to prevent the males from growing if this is what you want to encourage. A normal growth and in the best case even a resin stocking on the male pollen perennials, for example, would be advantageous.
