Software engineer, outdoor enthusiast, occasional ham radio operator, aspiring hunter and homesteader, bitcoiner, neopagan druid, used to race sailboats, too many hobbies to list. Based in Northern Virginia. I don't like, only zap.

It was very hit or miss for me. Sometimes I didn't notice the difference, sometimes it was intolerable. I turned it off a while ago, but maybe I'll turn it on again and report back

Depending on scale, doesn't Zeroconf address this? I'd also have to look at a bunch of the mesh networks that are popular in the ham radio space to see what other protocols are in use.

In any case, I'd guess this is mostly a solved problem, but it's solved ABOVE the IP layer, not as a replacement.

And to piggyback on this question, what is the advantage of creating new protocols to replace IP, TCP and UDP? They're well known, well understood, and have thousands of implementations out there. Sure, it may be possible to make a more efficient protocol for low-bandwidth environments, but most of the time there you'd either use a very minimal higher level protocol, or translate to TCP/IP at the other end anyway.

I know I've done a deep dive on this in the past, and found some interesting things, but nothing jumped out at me as a clear win over IP.

And now I have to go read the RFC's for IPv4, IPv6, TCP and UDP (and anything else I discover while I'm at it). Thanks. I had better things to do with my day off.

Eh, one could argue that once IPoAC was tested out, there was no need to reinvent the wheel, low bandwidth, low reliability, high latency IP was doable.

No, I understand, I've played around with WinLink a little. I just meant that Electrum has got some of the low hanging fruit of remote/constrained connectivity solved, use that as the beginning.

I'd think at a minimum you'd need a way to:

1. Request UTXOs for a given address

2. Transmit transactions

3. Verify fee rate (of the last few blocks?)

Alot of sailors and remote expeditions depend on https://winlink.org, would be so cool if we had a similar network for Bitcoin.

- TXN Broadcasting gateways

- BBS for Block height/difficulty, fee rate, supply

- ZeroLink when comes out will help with building txns with minimum sync

Don't need much just enough...

Would Electrum Server be a jumping off point for this sort of thing? I haven't looked at it in detail, but it seems like it's trying to accomplish much the same thing, though with less constrained bandwidth.

Ah, great, then I guess we're in agreement.

Have a great night, and thanks for the wonderful conversation!

Hum. So to you self-denial means giving up the ego? Or is it simpler than that, just realizing that you aren't the center of the universe? That is a form of exercise that makes giving up the ego easier, so it's something I try to do.

Could you get away with just using general relays for a new user, then a while down the road (a few posts, a few days, I don't know) send them to an article describing how to pick a home relay?

Ah, so are you using "giving up" as letting go of the ego? I don't like the term "self-denial", but I think I get what you're getting at.

The thing is, I don't think we give up the ego once and for all, but only in moments, much like non-thinking during (eastern) meditation.

The thing I don't know is if you are using this as an excuse for not making steps today to improve your life today. If so, stop. 😁

BTW, does your name come from Discordia, or just coincidence?

Maybe it's timetable start wearing this again...

Can you explain that more? To me, giving up would just be keeping doing what you've always done, while making a change, even in mindset is taking action.

Give up? I read it exactly the opposite. Take control. Maybe I'm mixing my stoicism with my Erisian Mysterees, but it's saying to give up on what you don't control, and take control of what you do. Which pretty much consists on what takes place between your ears, the echoing void of your own little pocket dimension.

OK, I think I'll add that to my catmas. This whole conversation caused me to pull down my copy of the Principia Discordia from the shelf and re-read my favorite passage:

A SERMON ON ETHICS AND LOVE

One day Mal-2 asked the messenger spirit Saint Gulik to approach the Goddess and request Her presence for some desperate advice. Shortly afterwards the radio came on by itself, and an ethereal female Voice said YES?

"O! Eris! Blessed Mother of Man! Queen of Chaos! Daughter of Discord! Concubine of Confusion! O! Exquisite Lady, I beseech You to lift a heavy burden from my heart!"

WHAT BOTHERS YOU, MAL? YOU DON'T SOUND WELL.

"I am filled with fear and tormented with terrible visions of pain. Everywhere people are hurting one another, the planet is rampant with injustices, whole societies plunder groups of their own people, mothers imprison sons, children perish while brothers war. O, woe."

WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH THAT, IF IT IS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO?

"But nobody Wants it! Everybody hates it."

OH. WELL, THEN STOP.

At which moment She turned herself into an aspirin commercial and left The Polyfather stranded alone with his species.

I don't really know. I just broadened the deities I worked with, got a little more serious in all areas of my life, and drifted away.

I'll defer to you, as I don't really know, but if one were only eating fat and protein, so taking in almost no carbs to be broken down into sugar, wouldn't you be skipping the sugar step?

Nothing at all, Eris is a Greek goddess of discord and strife. She started the Trojan war.

She's also the patron of Discordianism, which is often termed either a joke disguised as a religion, or the other way around. Nobody's really sure. I'm not really a Discordian anymore, but I have a lot of fondness for her.
