Yes, theoretically it could, and that’s been tried multiple times and always failed. I’ve watched open source software grow for over thirty years… big projects never get put back in a box, and Bitcoin is obviously the biggest of big projects at this point in history.

It may have already been coopted. Regardless, it is still pretty good for now. Likely due to this generations vigilance. But consider ten generations from now. The odds of eternal vigilance is near zero. Witness the US Bill of Rights 1792 vs 1992. It's still pretty good compared to the rest, but terrible compared to the original context or original promise.
