I think the issue is how he delivered this message. It wasn’t well written or inspiring - and I think that’s what people are looking for in commencement speeches. Never mind that most speeches are useless garbage anyway, but they are written to sound good. He just didn’t sound good.

Yeah he had the right message but not the correct delivery for the audience. And I also agree with your other comment that he should have hinted at it rather than gone into an explicit defense of it. He framed himself on the back foot and forced himself into a situation where he was defending it. What he should have done is setup a framing that forced the audience to defend the idea of holding value in money that the govt can print endlessly, showed how nightmarish a set wage/salary is in an inflationary environment, and then talked about the massive counterparty risks in investing and how easily that unravels.
Then he should have targeted the IDEA that we need a better money and posed to the audience, “If you are thinking about how much money you want to make, without thinking of the nature and type of money you are making, the future will not be kind to you.” Then left it open.
At least he tried and I think we've all done the "sigh" many times with family or friends.

Trite to say it, but, it is what it is. Nothing too surprising. Innovations are adopted by few then by many as the network effect kicks in. Collapse happens slowly, then all at once as the masses sense the end game and move to protect themselves. 20% of the people do 80% of the work. It is unfortunate because anyone who studies monetary history clearly understands these money systems (and their empires) don't last forever, they are replaced once they fail. The US dollar hegemony is long in the tooth, so rational people should be attempting to bet on its replacement. The bitcoin horse looks pretty damn fast when you compare its attributes to alternatives. I guess we will just all have to find out how things shake out, sadly (or exhiliratingly) the ramifications can/will be quite huge. It is what it is.
