Raw User count, or DAU's, is certainly SOMETHING that makes a difference. I agree it isn't everything, but as a "social network", these things have network effects, and size DOES matter.

On DAU's -- Bluesky = several millions

Mastodon -- =~500k-1mil

Nostr -- - ~ 15k

This is why I've been harping on improvement of the #mostr bridge... There are 10-100x more people we could be talking to, that we could get "for free."

Wow that's a massive difference

really puts it in perspective... we're a tiny little pond here, and there's a vast ocean that we could connect to....

Absolutely. Pretty insane

I wonder if they have the same kind of market place, culture and vibes at all. I’m kind of stuck here even if it’s just the same 21 people everyday.

Mastodon's very different. Geekier, left-er, as far as I can tell.... Bitcoin not really discussed.

Mastodon is a bunch of islands that don’t really connect. I could never get the hang of it and I didn’t find any sort of community at all, so I left.

Yeah... it's almost like, best of both worlds to be here but be able to selectively bridge over content without having to deal with internal server drama 😁

I think a lot of the problem is that a lot of servers on the other side block Nostr. The ones that don't lead to a flood of garbage. That's probably why most 2 way communication doesn't work, and a lot of Nostr users view the bridges as mostly spam.

Usually whenever I see something disgustingly racist, it turns out to be a bridged Mastodon account.

95% of the time this is true all the time. I have both bridges as muted words. Problem solved 😂

"Interesting observation! Social media can certainly amplify a variety of voices, but it’s always good to remember that perspectives can vary widely across platforms. Let's keep the conversation open and respectful! 🌍✨"

Well there are definitely servers that don't federate with Mostr or Momostr... But there are other servers that do, and posts don't show up... So I think there are other issues.

As for spam, yeah there's some, but there's good content too... I've been enjoying nostr:nprofile1qqsyk3sjx32e4xs5qj2rtcwapeyrj95yfn4d4h7kkhdgyjc409fmmespr9mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumt0d4hhxarj9ecxjmnt9urzqpjr for instance

The spam goes both ways. Nostr's loose moderation was used (maybe still is) to spam over the bridge. That's the reason a lot of servers blocked them.

Makes sense. I guess we had that coming.

What’s a mostr bridge? How would it work ?

Bridges (in principle at least) ferry messages back and forth between Nostr and Mastodon. That's at least, how it should work...

There are two Bridges, #mostr and #momostr. Neither work great, but Momostr is the more functional of the two. I describe it all here:

No, we know very little about how these bridges operate, or any kind of "dashboard" information like that. nostr:nprofile1qydhwumn8ghj7emvv4shxmmwv96x7u3wv3jhvtmjv4kxz7gpzamhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuurjd9kkzmpwdejhgtcpzemhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerfw36x7tnsw43z7qgkwaehxw309aex2mrp0yhx6mmnw3ezuur4vghsqgqyv87tanzvxd6y8xfj66u0zynfendhejtn44a9pt3k9kcntfr5m5c5utfg operates Mostr but doesn't really respond to comments about it, except occasionally to cuss me out... The nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnyv9kh2uewd9hj7qgewaehxw309aex2mrp0yh8xmn0wf6zuum0vd5kzmp0qyt8wumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kytcppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qythwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnswf5k6ctv9ehx2ap0qqsxhcu0333a7ldlsndha39xumammrgemj3mnq8045v9shzx7p9jd7gz4dcxl npub hasn't had an update since 2024...

And whomever is responsible for "momostr" has intentionally not disclosed their npub.

To respond to the 2nd point about content... I've personally not had that experience, I follow a bunch of Mastodon npubs that post content I want to see, like nostr:nprofile1qyvhwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddakk7um5wgh8q6twdvhsqgxqexcr5rkwztv2lxhqachh5vxg6hh4eqcacar0nrxm934gpypzvqxy3xgs for instance

Nothing stopping people from forking & improving it, except for time & desire.

Yeah, alright buddy... You can have a "safe space" for a certain ideology, or you can have an open, decentralized, censorship-resistant social media commons... You can't have both.

This is the mirror image of BlueSky worrying about whether decentralization leads to the spread of right-wing ideology.

Yeah, true... Although it's made much more difficult by the absolute refusal of anyone involved in these projects to actually talk about what the problems are. (and it doesn't help that it's on Gitlab, which makes you pay to post "issues")...
