for instance take the emperor of china... in ancient times such a man would enter a cosmic crisis and intense soul search if there were, say, a flood in an area of his kingdom... he would retreat and commune with his higher power asking what he had done wrong that had brought such misfortune upon his domain... and then change his behavior accordingly...

My 8 year old daughter asked a similar thing, how do you become a princess. I said one day people just called themselves king and queen and it stuck.

So I declared our house a kingdom and us a monarchy, wrote a constitution and knighted the whole family as king. Now she's a princess.
