What if every little bit of user attention spent on Threads will be compensated by a little bit of less attention spent on Instagram and vice-versa? Facebook may have willingly reduced Instagram's network effect.

They must have calculated this … the numbers must have been projected as a bigger share of the total market to make sense …

They would also now own more of users total social media output & data … which makes for more data for training LLM etc …

That's correct. The total amount would be similar anyway. In fact, there may be a slight shift and it could accelerate over time.

Completely typical that these companies would demolish their own network effect while looking for something to do

Has this happened before?

Is calling people nigger allowed here ?

Always

Usually it happens when a company gets acquired, for example Atlassian could have let Trello alone, but they couldn't do that.

How did they kill Trello?

To be fair Trello is not a thing that benefits much from network effect anyway.

Also if a normal Instagram user starts using Threads and realizes that communication over simple text is better than stupid moving images they might want to try a more established and more interesting network like Twitter and hopefully a more open one iike Nostr.

nobody uses threads honestly, ppl who made accounts realize how stupid it is and can’t delete it without deleting their entire ig account.

True

But threads accounts are instagram accounts so they likely don't care which one users are on, they're still extracting data to be able to sell more targeted ads. The text in threads probably enriches the data or at least makes it easier to process compared to photos and videos

Next Meta earnings report:

“User activity in threads grew by about 20% while Instagram and Facebook user activity declined by 20% combined. Although it is promising to see growth in threads, we must find ways to reengage users on our legacy platforms.”

Meta stock drops 10% on mixed user engagement as investors seek stability in Elon Musk’s blue check promises for the dying bird app.

You sir, are probably the only one whose iOS screen time hasn’t changed in past few years.

Maybe, but I actually don't think so. Zuck mighty be already planning to fully integrate threads on IG. Pretty much two sides of a same coin. Just hope they don't disturb Whatsapp with it, if so 100% needed Nostrzap 🙃

I think threads is instagram. look at the reverse engineered API, the mobile app just talks to the instagram API.

Hahahahahahahaha

idc about anything Zuck-owned,

#nostr is the shaite, period!

You can only mine so much attention from users to sell ads. Can't grow forever that way. Either you get 100% of the user's attention, at which point how do they pay for anything being advertised since they are useless phone slaves, or users disconnect because they hate the attention mining. Seems like an unsustainable high time preference scheme to me.

OR (and hear me out on this one) we just have the founders 69 each other in Vegas and place bets on who has pastier, milky-white thighs.

i assume they’ll be able to monetise user minutes equally on threads. net positive for meta that’s been struggling to attract young users
