I tip for exceptional service and not to pay your staff's wages.

Tips are a bonus and not a wage or part of your pay. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Here in the US they disagree lol

Exactly. It might just be me but after covid service quality seems to have plummeted.

it has because since after covid business owners hiring staff on "mini-job" or part-time basis. At least over here. Meaning I'm being offered the same wage in catering than a 17 year old working during his vacation from school. Only difference is that I've worked over 30 years in hospitality, was trained as restaurant professional in a Hotel after finishing school. I've spent three decades in the industry with a heavy focus on bar work / mixology and no, I will not work for €12/ hour with that experience while you're telling me "you know, the tips are good".

In Japan, tipping makes you look super rude.

I didn't know that!

Funny thing, in Europe they slowly integrate this. But they do it more if they think you are a tourist. Especially from the US. Don’t ask me how i know about that.

In fact, tips help shop owners keep wages low!
