Is there a new verification method? How come we don’t see a domain. For example, I noticed Jack’s account doesn’t show CashApp anymore.
I took off my NIP5. I don’t know. I just don’t think it’s the right and accessible solution for individuals. Great for orgs and companies tho.
I don’t have another idea at the moment. Best way you know it’s me atm is my pubkey which was posted to my Twitter account. Drafting off 17 years there.
NIP5 is a great solution to prevent being scammed by fake accounts.
Especially if the only way to verify pubkeys is to find it on a centralized and competing app.
I like that domains are being used as a tool for verification on bluesky too.
It still has a dependency on ICANN
Any thoughts on nip-05 substitute for those without a twitter who join nostr?
I don’t have a great idea unfortunately. Considering.
Built reputation is king ultimately tho.
damn near everything has a dependency on ICANN if its on the Internet because they control the DNS.
I do think NIP-05 can provide value for individuals but I agree it’s fundamentally broken.
what are your thoughts on some of the emerging web of trust experiments on nostr? could this be a viable solution?
In a decentralized network all users need to have a fair, straightforward way to keep their own credentials. Delegating credentials arguably got us in the current structural messes in the first place.
If it contains an “@“, it has to go.
There are fully decentralized DNS systems. Or have a reputation system + BitTorrent for KV of plaintext name + pubkey
Maybe Handshake could fix this
Yeah, I kinda don't see the point given I'm pretty much just copypasting npubs anyway to add folks. Never used NIP5 once TBH. Yoinked mine with a temp NIP26 dummy entry point to my cracked/vanity future NIP.
Yea NIP5 does not make sense for people that don’t own domains which is a large share of the public…whoever solves a decentralized identity protocol that anyone can use and does not involve scanning your eyeballs will have something big
All I know is that It was the best feeling in the world adding the nostr.report NIP05 to the entire #[6] team.
I personally think that a lot individuals in the future will have their own domain, but even if not, what we really need is to understand someone’s reputation, not identification.
NIP05 is overrated anyways. Mainly because it can’t use the bitcoin ₿ !! Either the content being posted is worth following, or someone like you is genuinely interacting. “Verification” is lame all around.
I like nip-05 from a tribal standpoint. I have several nip-05s, both my own and groups I belong to. It’s a pretty platonic way to identify.
Just got my #nodestrich nip-05 today🤙
Back in the day , in Italy , and maybe still some today , some addresses have different colors indicating a business residence
Would work reliably for people who use gpg such as developers belonging to a WoT.
oh that’s a bold statement, but I like it;
NIP-05 is simply not what most people thing it is
does help with verbal discoverability (“find my on nostr as jack@…”)
It was always supposed to be just one of many methods, we're just missing the other methods.
There is https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/blob/master/39.md too, which https://nostr.directory/ issues (right, nostr:npub1xhe9408d5hm3dpwax78sy9nuc5warycnvcy4r3qzv6jacwu26r6s5m56yf?) and clients could somehow implement support for querying and displaying. I don't know if there is any that does that.
And also the petname/wot stuff that could be done with just NIP-02 but is underutilized too, which is ok since it's hard.
Could it be a gpg message signature be a solution ?
I agree, we have to think about it:
nostr:note1qqqqq8k8nu3nkwz4hd77tcjwk3k58zqyf8ndsvjqft7qymd6squqlw9qza
Perhaps the searchability benefit can be achieved with username + web of trust check.
