Watched an intriguing conversation about school on Nostr this evening.

One side a math teacher/curriculum designer, the other side more unschooling/homeschooling stance.

Do you think you’re coerced to go to school? 🤔

Remember: coercion isn’t consent. 💡

To be clear, I’m not arguing against homeschooling/unschooling. Like most things today, it’s difficult to have anuanced conversation about large institutions. There is no denying that there are many problems with the current structure of our education systems, but that doesn’t mean they are “factories” producing “mindless” adults who conform, lack the ability to think for themselves and have the curiosity drilled out of them.

My son has just started high school this year, he’s struggled with attendance since Covid and same again this first term.

It’s complicated with minor health and sleep issues but a lot of the woke BS being pushed on him and his cohort isn’t helping.

I’m generally just supportive as much as I can be and am not trying to force attendance, I understand how that might sound to some but generally he’s whip smart and progressing as a person in the right ways.

He’s certainly prepared to challenge the narrative much more effectively than anyone of his mates.

Right or wrong I’m not sure but I’m doing my best!

Sounds like you’re doing the best for him, and he’ll likely seek out his own learning interests.

Had a nice unexpected email from his history teacher that he’d made top 5 in the class on his recent ancient history assignment. When asked about it he said the teacher wasn’t a dick.

We unschool worldschool and the traditional educators have such a biased view 😂

Many (not all) think school is so important. But until they experience a home education/unschool/worldschool first hand, they cannot adequately compare or comprehend how outdated the system of school is. 🫠

We live in a time where the entire worlds knowledge is at home on the internet. We all can access the internet. Schools aren't necessary. If I can educate my children in less than an hour each day, at a higher quality level than an institution, then why (other than daycare) do parents send children to school? It is because we are taught we cannot teach our own (a lie) and we are disempowered to raise our children. Parents around the world are robbed of the opportunity to witness the joy of experiencing children learn which breaks my heart 💔

I'm interested to read/listen or watch the conversation you saw!
