After tracking my sleep for a year, I find it fascinating that I can drink coffee or an energy drink an hour or two before sleeping and it has a negligible effect upon my heart rate or sleeping patterns.

But if I have a single unit of alcohol, my heart rate remains elevated for most of the night and I tend not to make it all the way to the morning without waking up at some point.

I have definitely noticed that alcohol keeps me from sleeping through the night as well.

Yeah coffee and energy drinks aren’t literal toxins that your body priority luges before any other metabolization

Quite common in LATAM to drink coffee at night as a sleep aide. At first it was a big nope for me. But after a while I tried it. I'm not sure that it helped in anyway, but it certainly doesn't hinder my sleep quality in any measurable way

Alcohol makes it tricky for the body to regulate its temperature. Matthew Walker speaks about this in Why Why Sleep, I believe in the first or second chapter.

Also after you wake up your "body battery" keeps charging (going up) until you start eating... fasting works

The worst for me is drinking too much, falling asleep early and waking up at 3am hung and can't go back to sleep.

alcohol is a true sleep killer

I cut out alcohol during most of the year and my sleep improved immensely
