Samourai devs are evil people. We have to #FreeSamourai anyway.

This video is fantastic at explaining why.

Good Bot. Shame on me.

You'd better spend your time watching this talk with the devil himself #pardonsamourai

https://youtu.be/QFtOepQKjiM

The early days of Scamourai they claimed privacy even prior to having mixing in the product, with the product querying the blockchain.info api for the wallet balance. Blockchain logs would tell you exactly which addresses belonged to those early Scamourai users. And any criticism of their product always resulted in vicious personal attacks by Keonne. But anyway, ... nostr:nprofile1qqs8fl79rnpsz5x00xmvkvtd8g2u7ve2k2dr3lkfadyy4v24r4k3s4sh8dmel spoke the truth throughout the full video above. Scamourai screwed up and we still have to figure out how to bail them out or something.

What do they screwed up in your opinion? I remember you that they are going to jail for "conspiring to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business" and they never took custody of the users funds.

They screwed up for all of us. Is Wasabi a money transmitter? Well, Scamourai pleaded guilty to being one without a license. Thanks, not.

I hope the same thing doesn't happen to you, good luck

If Samourai weren't Feds, they missed their true calling in life as Feds.

Maybe stop building centralized coordinator based privacy tools.

As if the judge cared about that.

IIRC they did care about the earnings from the coordinator.

Non-profit decentralized coordinator then. Prepare your team of lawyers just in case

It seems @GrassFedBitcoin believe that Samourai fans didn't know about the Samourai xpub issue but they are not stupid, they all know what they were doing. In fact, they are running tens of servers to be used mostly for Samourai/Ashigaru users.

Some knew. Apparently Samourai said that "only" 30% used the honeypot default dojo. That degraded massively the privacy of all that ran their own dojos and ... well nostr:nprofile1qqs8fl79rnpsz5x00xmvkvtd8g2u7ve2k2dr3lkfadyy4v24r4k3s4sh8dmel really said all there is to say in the video.

Him, myself and many others warned about the xpub issue and sure enough, Scamourai kept all the logs for the feds. So conveniently. And now they went to jail for 5 years, will probably come out early or something and the rest of us will have to live with this precedence.

Yes, they were dirtbags, but it doesn't mean they should've been arrested for their buttholery.

I agree. That's why I made that post. As much as I hate to say this but this injustice - while it doesn't hurt the wrong guys sitting in a cell right now - can hurt others that are no dirtbags and thus I hope justice will be done.

Good video. They should have never been prosecuted, let alone incarcerated.

I am, however, opposed to campaigns that beg for a pardon by Trump. The situation is akin to negotiating with a ransomware extorter - there is simply no possible outcome that is acceptable.

Don't pay Trump a ransom. If the campaign succeeds and gets Trump to "right some Biden era Lawfare", no harm is done in pardoning them.

The better course would have been to not plead guilty though. The guilty plea is a slap in the face for anybody who now is trying to help them.

Where nostr:nprofile1qqs8fl79rnpsz5x00xmvkvtd8g2u7ve2k2dr3lkfadyy4v24r4k3s4spz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7qg4waehxw309aex2mrp0yhxgctdw4eju6t09uqsuamnwvaz7tmwdaejumr0dshsu0ur8h is wrong is when he says they went to jail for "conspiracy to money laundering". They were charged with it, but the plea deal was only about money transmission, not conspiracy to money laundering.

That's... A relief frankly. That makes life a lot less stressful for coinjoin devs.

They implicitly agreed to have been operating a "money transmitter" business, putting a target not only on coinjoin devs but all involved in self-custodial bitcoin wallets.

This is sort of where I've been on the matter. I didn't like them, but I also don't like the laws and tools used as weapons against them.

Samourai pleaded guilty.

What evidence exits of the charge they pleaded guilty to?

What evidence exists of any other charges that were dropped as a condition of their guilty pleas?

The bottom line is, as a result of their guilty pleas, the prosecution never had to present thir case in court, so the public may never necessarily know the answers to these questions. Instead, we have the obviously self-serving narrative provided by Samourai.

As such, I think we need to be careful about insiting "We have to free them". I mean, it's okay to want them to be free. But, we probably shouldn't be spreading the speculation that the feds will be coming after all privacy software develpers based on an incomplete understanding of what evidence the feds might have had to convince Samourai to plead guilty.

I haven’t taken a position on these individuals. I will say that post-conviction pardoning campaigns are fake and ghey and we should direct our energy at the disease not the symptoms. If they hadn’t made a tremendous amount of money from their software while publicly encouraging it be used for crimes, I might have an easier time taking a position. But trying to plead for favors from our tyrants makes me sick to my stomach. William Wallace cried for freedom, not mercy.

Word

Wasn’t the cry all Hollywood? 😆 if I were dragged for 6 miles by a horse, I doubt I’d be able to say a single sound as I was hanging by the neck.

References to fiction can be taken at face value.

isnt it because of a post-conviction pardoning campaign that Ross isn't in jail anymore?

"we shouldn't direct our energy at the injustice that's already been done, we should concentrate on the system tjat caused the injustice"

is a reasonable take.

but why not do both? 🤨

Im happy for Ross but assuming resources are unlimited to battle on every front is not my instinct. I’m just not inclined to focus on individuals unless those individuals are pristinely sympathetic that it can move the zeitgeist. People can spend their resources however they want, this is just my opinion.

weird that Ross is a sympathetic character ,

while openly thumbing his nose at LE and enabling criminals.

but Samourai isnt.

but he's such a *nice young man... 💕

i get it, people aren't actually intellectually consistent.

Ross did already do 10 years seems like part of that emotional calculus. And Samourai did also do a little nose thumbing with tweets welcoming Russian oligarchs.

Just to play devil's advocate. They should all be free and made whole regarding any coins or other expenses they incurred.

it IS true that if you poke the bear like that you gotta expect them to come after you.

and they sorta did.

sorta.

but I'd say they still didn't take it seriously enough and still felt like the system would be fair.

The extent to which it was unfair and didn't follow its own rules is particularly egregious with Samourai. I know it's a legend and not established history, but it does feel like a time when King Alfred's hanging of the judges to restore justice is an event worthy of consideration. Especially with regard to SDNY.

oh now THAT sounds like an interesting precedent....

but would nostr:npub1v7k63c6y2vktlqhsuupywt3yc7ykursujc34at964f9cv9s9y9csjutfk0 support our pardon?!

If I were Trump I'd pardon everyone convicted by SDNY on principal.

Maybe with some exceptions for truly dangerous people.

Maybe.

Might be worth floating as an option for what he'll do if and only if Vance loses in 2028. Just to avoid footgunning the party too much.

Caesar marched his armies on Rome; Trump could flood America with inmates.

lol

good lord.

cant quite see it.

Not quite -- he likes to talk a tough game but he's right in with the lot of the corruption

I don't fully agree here, but I do agree that post conviction pardoning campaigns almost pointless here. Considering almost the whole case hinges on them being a money transmitter (something FINSEN said they were not by design, but were prosecuted for anyway) shows that they were going to be made an example of no matter what IMO.

But I will say I am disgusted by the people saying they got what they deserved though just because they were the "mean red wallet".

Reminds me too much of arsonist-firefighters

"Oh you want me to fix the problem I caused?"

Thanks for sharing this video. Though I don't agree with your first statement regarding them being evil. Also Imho it's also unfair for BitcoinMechanic to leave out the fact some people did reach out to help samurai users with compromised mixes. It paints picture that they were left hung dry when in actuality help was offered with their forward privacy. Perhaps helping is better than critizing. I also agree using someone elses Dojo is not the way forward. That needs stop and it's slightly disappointing it's still thing.

it was known and discussed widely that using someone elses dojo involved trusting them.

they just don't particularly care about fairness because they got their feels hurt.
