Seems like I'm in the vocal minority on this but I think social interaction ought have some friction and mirror how real world interactions occur. If we are using algo training wheels, it cheapens the interaction and discovery process. That leads us down the path of shitty inauthentic content catered towards algo discovery over human discovery.

Its my opinion that yes, you should be intentional about when and what you post. The digital world we live in warps the natural order of social interaction. Nostr has been a haven from that.

By implementing algos it opens the door to manipulation. Has everyone already forgotten the outcry against primal trending? If we let nostr be human powered then people need to put in some work to renote the things they want heard, when they want them heard.

Algo powered platforms already exist, why are we trying to be like everyone else? IDGAF if everyone hears my shitty takes. Those who want to interact with me will. If you miss a note from me, so be it. If it's important I can boost my own note later. If you see something you want others to see too, come back and boost it when you know the specific audience is online.

Why do we have to be everything to everyone at all times?

I’m completely happy with a chronological feed from npubs and hashtags I follow.

Same.

I have some npubs that I end up missing a lot of notes from who I genuinely want to hear from. When I do come across them, sometimes I go and scroll their profile (a tiny bit of PoW). It's sort of like catching up with a friend I haven't talked to in ages. That dopamine hits different than if I were inundated by their "top posts" constantly, which i otherwise wouldnt do. To me this is a feature not a bug.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Its that sorta thing.

I do this too. I have a handful of people that I will look at their profile regularly to see what I've missed. I don't rely on my feed or my follow list. it's a bit like memorizing someone's phone number. I do feel a closer connection with them than other people I meet online.

I've been using Mastodon for years and it doesnt have any algos and I love it. It's also feast or famine but the signal to noise is very high. The one thing it has that's missing in Nostr in better notifications. On Mastodon I can get a notification when someone I really care about post so I dont missing anything. The rest is just a local timeline like Nostr and I just see what scrolls by during the day.

but Mastodon is dumb and centralized so we dont care about any of the good things it might have.

I use Nostr daily and also hate it daily.

I like the idea of post notifications. That puts discovery firmly in my own control.

You also bring up a good point re signal vs noise. I think algos will only serve to generate noise when a certain population decide it's more important to grow their account through clickbait.

That said, why do we even care about "growing your account"? Are you here to build a big network or a strong network? Because those are the tradeoffs imo.
