In conclusion...
GIFs are awesome.
Your client is broken, because mine plays automatically and with no fuss. MP4 is 350KB, gif with shittier quality is 3MB and shorter. So, in conclusion, GIFs were good in 1990, they suck now and should die a fast death. Lightweight is never something I would associate with GIF.

Lightweight? It’s quite heavy when you compare filesize. We need a proper GIFmp4 format to marry the two. Autoplay in loop with easy way to add a text layer.

We have to keep using GIF because of Apple’s policy in Safari. Safari will auto play gifs, but is much more picky about autoplaying mp4. The majority of internet users base their entire attention and decisions on video, and if you don’t autolay video for them, they will quickly switch back to instagram or TikTok. This is the cold reality.
That’s fud, auto play was restricted by Chromium and the most adopted it. Autoplay of video is easy, mute it and it’ll work on 97% of browsers in the wild.
Remember all the pop-ups back in the day with 5-20 new windows loading and the little one the size of two sprites was the one with the porno music you couldn't find.
Some Nostr clients allow you to choose if you want to auto play vids or not but not sure about "animations."
Myself I'm not a fan of auto play and shut it off everything if I can.

Clicking to play a 7 seconds video is worthless effort and annoying. Even more enabling autoplay to play a few seconds videos among other videos, gets old too fast.
Gifs are better for that and survived the test of time.
Not to say gifs doesn't have the melt brain effect like short videos
