Why do we still buy (rent?) phone numbers?

No one needs these numbers anymore. End them.

I look forward to this all the time. So many of the conventional systems need phone numbers to sign up though. They'll go away eventually

Any protocol that requires a "sign up" should be ignored (it is actually a proprietary service). If it becomes a business necessity, hire a bridge service.
