The ColdPower is, to-date, one of the coolest Bitcoin-adjacent things I’ve ever seen. H/t nostr:npub1az9xj85cmxv8e9j9y80lvqp97crsqdu2fpu3srwthd99qfu9qsgstam8y8

Useful. When LoRa bitcoin nodes brought to you by coin kite?

I was thinking exactly the same 🤓

😎

I love ‘em 🔥

Agree. I searched all over Amazon for something similar, but nothing comes close. It's not just for tinfoil hats; it's a great emergency charger. It's so compact, perfect for travel, or having it in a bug-out bag.

Emergency charger 🤯 what a great point!!!

Mobile phone power banks work just as good and their supply chain isn't related to Bitcoin

True, but I trust Coinkite more than I trust miscellaneous Chinese company

using primary alkaline batteries to recharge or power devices is a real use case; like a burner phone reserved for gps in back-country situations, you need to be able to carry a quantity of alkaline batteries and recharge in the field over a span of days or weeks. Obviously not important for most people in most situations, but still, a real use case for those who need it.

Yes, love that Little thing🧡

IF YOU DON'T BREAK IT WHILE PUSHING THE BATTERY ON. LOL. #FLIMSY

Always careful but the reminder is good 🫡

I broke it right away, but I was able to power it on using a tool from my iFixit toolkit. This is definitely one drawback of the device.

this board is really brilliant

That's the only way I use mine

This must be the only product of the line I'm confident I do not need. Clearly I'm missing something. What security risk am I exposing my stack to when using say, a phone charger?

If the phone charger and cord are both capable of transmitting data, then you have a new attack surface for a device that has otherwise never been plugged into another computer.

Ex: USB phone charging ports in airports are notorious for being modified by bad actors to steal your phone data when you plug it in.

Agreed 🫡

Makes way more sense to power sensitive electronic devices with clean DC power than with dirty modified AC power from a charge cube. I wouldnt stick my Coldcards into anything else.

💯

True 👍

What is the tinfoil hat vector here?

The idea that plugging the device into a laptop or other data-capable device creates an attack surface that doesn’t exist if all its electricity comes from a battery

This is as air-gapped as it gets!

I read this in Tools of Titans, by Tim Ferris(Sammy Kamkar section)

USB is insecure, but the cold power uses a battery and even if it was compromised, the cable attaches to a magnet so there's no way to transmit data to it.

Even if this is not in your threat model, however, it makes it easier to sign transactions in a bank vault where there might not be an outlet.

Only way I ever power mine on, absolutely love it. Full send on the tin foil

💯💯💯
