Youtube algorithm uses watch time as an indicator of whether something is interesting to people. Naturally, people make longer videos, even when a short one would have been sufficient to answer a query. Algorithms literally waste away human life. It’s not that they are bad by surfacing information, but they tend to favor metrics such as time on site, watch time, etc.. anything that keeps people hooked. I dunno about you but I think this is evil. Everything is designed to appease the advertising overlords. For what? To buy some wasteful thing you’ll throw away anyway? Waste of life, waste of resources, waste of time.

Don’t get me started on SEO … 😬

Yes, attention economy is a shitcoin ✌️

Yeah, but in the end you decide if you watch something or not. Right?

I agree with you statement, but they try to show only things in that specific format like #[2] said, unfortunately

Better than 6 second videos imo

That’s what you think. But in reality, you’re being manipulated psychologically to stay on the website.

People don’t have as much free will as they think.

I know. I can feel it when I’m on YT. But it’s still me that’s going to stay or not. But I know they are manipulating us. Obviously. On the other hand I spend so much time on Nostr and feel addicted without any algorithm. And I prefer YT preferring long videos over 6 second videos

People’s preferences vary and of course if you’re there for entertainment, you’ll spend as much time as you like. I’m talking more about the filler content so many YouTubers add just to appease the algos.

Watch mr beast interviews about video editing to see what goes into extracting every bit of your attention for every second of the video. This is the level of manipulation YouTubers aspire to.

Understand

Fato!

Only in the sense that people agree with every single term and condition of using twitter or not use it all. Or any other service, but we know 100% of people don't actually agree with them. They are pressured into consent by culture and necessity. Not really consent at all. And nobody wants long useless videos, they just want the content thats relevant, but what are the other options to get that info in an attention economy. Nostr, maybe, but only if posts aren't driven by people just trying to obtain sats from those with wealth (and therefore power) to be able to do so.

another good reason 2 avoid algo n bots

Tiktok fixes this. They deboost longer videos in favor of shorter videos.

😂 😂

That's wasn't meant to be funny but ok. 😂

Oh boy… I guess that calls for more notes on this subject. Tiktok is even worse than YouTube.

100% afree with this, but doesn't Zapping create a problem just a bad: People with lots of money pay for the tweets that have the most influence . Ie, the tweets that get the most attention/ zaps are ones that incentivise the wealthy, those with money to spend on zapping. My fear is that posts to nostr that gain the most influence will be the ones that can persuade the wealthiest in society to donate sats. Nostr politics becomes tied to the interests of those with the most sats to spend. So watch time algorithms of twitter are replaced with those able to make posts that attract the wealthiest donors. I'm not sure a social media platform that serves posts written primarily to appeal to the richest in society is good for society or good politics either.

Only if you sort by most zaps. But zaps don’t mean anything as they can be faked. Worse yet: you just get to see the highest paid opinion

Right. So what is the point in zaps exactly? It seem every nostr client is really keen on implementing them. To me they are a turn off, for the reasons you said.

The point is rewarding the creators of content you like. Paying for content, so that the writers of said content don't resort to shilling shit just to be able to earn a living from their writing.

You can't yet earn a living from zaps, but the underlying incentive structure is there and it will slowly come to reality as NOSTR grows.

I value my time enough to pay for YouTube premium.

I was with you until they jacked up the price. I wish I could pay the old price without the music streaming.

Pihole does a good job removing ads in a web browser though. Rumble also has some good ad free content.

Well that explains the meteoric rise of Lex Fridman

What do you mean?

No matter which platform I'm using, if a video is too long and doesn't warrant it I will either skip through it or just not watch it. Also, I tend to unfollow people who constantly put out less than 1 minute "previews" of their videos. They do it to feed the algorithm beast and I want nothing to do with that.

All metrics incentivized will be gamed for benefit, this is basic praxeology.

That is very true but after MTV moved over to reality TV where else would you have been able to watch the dance moves? Its a catch 22.

I make music videos for my music so logically they are bound to the lenghtif songs. Everybody stops by asking why it has more views which I find encouraging but I feel yourube algorithm has blessed similar chanels nut made mine almost invisible. It is what it is, a bit of random
