Poeple who strive to be free of the control of big, centralized, for-profit, propritary tech:

How do YOU do it?

Do you just avoid most technology?

If not, what's your go-to for things like:

1. Thermostats you can access from your phone (a not-Nest device)?

2. Password managers (a not-Lastpass)?

3. Mobile phone (that is not trying to scan your pictures and/or snitch on you)?

4. Email?

5. File storage / backups?

6. Where do you shop online (not-Amazon)?

7. Calendar?

8. Videoconferencing (a not-Zoom/Teams)?

9. Chat (a not-Discord)?

I have opinions, very strong ones, but I want to hear what others use and how they like them.

I use nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll and do my password management, file storage, media streaming, run my nodes, run anything i can on my own within reason as i dont have the technical chops ( yet) to do it from scratch but cant stop wanting to have better control of my digital footprint.

🤙

Cool to see people self-hosting. That's not something a lot of people can handle, even with projects that make it easier like Start9, Yunohost and others. Because "easier" doesn't mean "easy".

Do you host your own email from your Start9 server? What about the other services from the list like password management, smart thermostats and the like?

Start9

Does thafmean nextcloud for file storage, calendar, and email?

What about the others from the list?

Im probably a bit of an outlier as I kinda work in tech. But I also think of self-hosting as a hobby as much its a necessary skill to stay as out from under "big tech". Im glad that things like start9 are trying to make it easy for people who might not be super technically savvy (but can read and follow directions and are willing to learn a bit) self host.

1. openHab and compatible devices for house automation, but I don't have a lot, mostly light control. Been looking into zwave stuff.

2. Bitwarden (self-hosted)

3. Phones are tough. I have 2 numbers, one is linked to business, one is as private as I can make it. all telecoms are a huge privacy mess.

4. Used to self-host email. Currently using my web host, but would like to go back to self-hosting. But email is fucked.

5. Nextcloud for shit I want to share and want access outside my network. sync thing at home.

6. I still cave to Amazon sometimes but make an effort to shop locally before going online. and I use sites like betterworldbooks.com for books that i want and can't find in a bookshop.

7. Nextcloud still.

8. I don't do a lot of this. i like Jitsi, but It's annoying to try to get people to actually use it. I've also futzed with Nextcloud talk. I have a tablet that I use for zoom if i need it.

9. so fucking many, lol.
