I am a bit lost!...

In one hand people say they want "FREEDOM of SPEECH" but when they hear something that disagree their belief system, their conditioning or something that they are not accustomed to or something unnatural to them or not align with their values, you tagged it as "HATE SPEECH"?

You cannot ask one thing and aboloshed the other because you disagree with them. The beauty of FREE SPEECH is to have DIVERSE OPINION. It means whether you agree with my OPINION or NOT, it is still my RIGHT.

So you cannot use the HATE SPEECH only when it suits you!

Can you DEFINE what do you consider as HATE SPEECH because I cannot find it on the legal system! Or have I missed something?

Tell me, are we really EXERCISING OUR FREE SPEECH or are we EXERCISING our BIASES?

Thoughts #nostr?

Hate speech is clearly not specific enough.

What must be prohibited is speech that jeopardizes the physical integrity of others. There must be a clear incitation to physical violence for it to not benefit the free speech label. Think Radio Mille Collines in Rwanda in 1994 for example.

indeed. When things are left undefined and left to the imagination to those who are "supposedly" execute the law is very dangerous! We know who will be left as collateral!

Just because you can say anything you want doesn’t mean that you should.

The internet would be a much less incendiary place if people spoke to each other as they would face to face in the street.

Being able to back up your opinions with well reasoned, logical, fact based arguments would also make the discourse more productive.

True.

However, not everyone speaks with truth regardless whether on the internet or face to face. It is unwise to believe that everyone speaks the TRUTH just because we live to speak the truth, fact based. Not everyone is ready to hear the truth and even if they do, their social conditioning, their upbringing will stop them from seeing "REALITY" vs "THEIR REALITY".

We need to learn to accept that there will be people in this world with varying values and beliefs. Just because we seek TRUTH and we want to speak on fact based, it does not mean everyone wants the same.

My point, we should be willing to have an open dialogue, a conversation, and open discussion. Let's all be mindful of our biases. Before we react, label every conversation as hate speech. Ask ourselves, why am I labelling it as HATE.

Is it because those phrases are offensive to me or aggresive?

Let's admit different culture have different tolerance of what is offensive and not, HATE or not.

As someone who grew up in the East and live in the West, two different culture, I completely understand this by experience.

Hence, there is Law and Order. But if the very fabric of it, the very institutions who put the bill, are struggling to be honest and transparent to their people, I believe this is an ongoing challenge.

All we can do is start the change from within. There is no community unless we do not work within ourselves.

Good discussion though! 😊

Have a good one!

At one time I was part of the ā€œpatriot movementā€ in the US everyone always talked about freedom and liberties, but it was the same thing… freedom and liberties for them and people who thought like them…
