Ok, last addendum.

The email comparison might sound funny to some but I think it's worth thinking about it for a sec. Why is email, this horrible, unsafe thing still alive?

And would you like to receive your bills, contracts and so on via Facebook, X, etc where the company can just edit these documents after they sent them?

#nostr could replace social media AND #email

#noedits

Okay, but now I have to ask... If there's a debate about whether to "allow" edits, then doesn't that mean that whatever is decided now is meaningless? Cuz someone can just decide in the future to add edits.

I don't know how NIPs are realised tbh, not deep enough into the process. Sure anyone can implement stuff I guess, but other clients and also relays have to support that. So I guess in the end it's about which version/fork has the most users.

All I can do is push out my thoughts and hope devs and users alike consider them.

This discussion is around since at least two years here I think 😅 but I increasingly see it again these days.

I get it that it's unusual for newbies, been there myself. But hey, everyone else here also has to live with their typos, too.

Just shows me who's human and who's a bot 😁

I think it could be very appealing to newbies. Like, there's a horde of techy dudes that insist on writing in vim, and I just don't get it, but there it is. There's some kind of appeal in certain limitations if it stands apart from other things.

Also I still consider myself a newbie. Been here maybe 2 months I think.

I think so too - coming from Twitter, no edits also meant a bit of "getting used to" for me personally. But I think it's worth getting used to as laid out to a) make #nostr more than just a niche twitter replacement but a new universal communication protocol

and b) just improve discussion culture In general. I think people think less about what they write and what impact it has on others when they can always revert and change history.

And just to get that out of the way, in case anybody think about this: I would never ever support a "clear name policy" or so other BS the corpo networks try to keep their users on bay. In my experience, even if you are a nym there is a reputation to lose (or to gain lol). And during my last years here I realized this is enough social pressure for most to stay reasonable. If not, I block them and carry on.

Yeah. I actually end up personifying this name way more than I would've thought. And I've thought of changing the name, since discovering a cult that holds my name in high regard, but doing so would potentially mean not being recognized by a few people here who I value. So reputation for a fake name is quite motivating.

Really, real names don't actually matter anymore, because bitcoin is a push payment system. The reason every company needed names before was because payments were pull oriented - you give details to a company that pulls from your bank. We can build the whole world on perfect anonymity now. Or more accurately, privacy can now fully close the gap with anonymity, or as much as individuals require. There's no longer any practical need for IDs in business.

I'm a sucker for weird cults, can you send me their name (DM is fine), I want to look them up lol

And yes, name changes are confusing here, but if you keep your picture for some weeks longer it's usually also no problem. Just don't change both at the same time. And if you wanna be double safe, DM those people you value

I don't remember the name, but if you search "saint Germain purple flame" it'll come up. I found several reddit posts talking about them, especially their weird perfectly maintained mansions they keep in major cities. Oh heck I can search it... One sec...

Oh, they have a bunch of names. Yeah just search that, its all the top results, all different names but same thing

Just... Be careful. The vibes I get from these websites kinda compels me to advise caution.

I'm not planning to interact, but thanks for the advice

I noticed you stopped talking right after I relayed how to find a cult... It made me wonder if you got sucked in that fast

Coincidence. It was five am already - thanks for noticing though 😅

I didn't join yet 😄

"yet"... 😒

Just kidding, don't worry. My devotion goes to Eris and "Bob". I won't join any other weirdo religion, two are enough. Unless the have a proper argument in favour of simulation theory... 😄

It would surprise me if they didn't

Don't advertise 🤣

Thanks, will check 😁

Just to look at both sides here, as someone who want's email ded. Nostr can still be a privacy nightmare though in many different ways. Choose you own nightmare for now I guess.

True, but it can't be worse than email, or can it? 😄

I really don't know - my reputation is to be stupid 🤣 - but we already use the same address format (at least with nip-05), and we already can send money to these addresses, not only text.*

Lightning is there, so in a theoretical hyperbitcoinized future my electricity company could send me a lightning bill embedded directly, and things like that.

* Shameless pluck: Want a free #nostr and vanity #lightning address? Be my guest at zaps.lol

You coded that? I got mine there. I don't think I'm using it right, though.

Aww sweet, yes I did. I am never checking the users though 🤣

What am I supposed to do with it? I did when I was trying to figure out how to get a lightning wallet

It makes it more easy for others to find you, they can search for that address instead of the cryptic npub. You maybe can also use it to have the same lightning address, so you could redirect bigretard@coinos.io to resonance@zaps.lol as well

Do people have to search the full resonance@zaps.lol or just resonance?

Maybe I could change the address to resonance... Maybe same thing, idk

If they follow you, clients are smart enough. If I type "@reso" you come up.

It's more about being discoverable by others I think. And you need the @domain part.. the whole thing works with web domains, so getting rid of it is not possible right now. That's why I tried to get an "as short as possible" domain name 😄

Makes sense. OK, I probably just messed up lightning... But I think I changed it to resonance on both ends. I must be the only one with this name cuz it didn't complain

I think you did all perfectly good. 👍

Sending still works. Can you test the other way for me?

Hmm... This might be a cool scam to get zaps...

Sending also works, but I sent to your coinos address now. If you login to zaps.lol you could put that coinos address in and it would redirect, so you could use "resonance@zaps.lol" as your nostr address and lightning address. That step is totally optional and purely cosmetic though, so no need.

Zapping you works fine 😊

mmm... I might have lost whatever details I needed to log back in. I tend to lose those...

Oh it needs a browser extension. I still haven't gotten into using extensions.

Yeah, I was too lazy to code more. sorry 😅

It works with Alby, e.g.

Put as I said, it's very optional. There are no disadvantages in not having that redirect. It's just like an "forward to my other address" for emails

What does a coffee reaction mean btw 😅 I wondered yesterday and now I do again

I like coffee. Its somewhere below a heart, but above everything else

Oftentimes means I see it and acknowledge, but I can't think of anything interesting to say, so its a placeholder until I do, but I never do. But likeness overall. Cuz coffee gud

Very reasonable ☕

Yesterday I thought it meant "you had too much caffeine, calm down" 😄

Well for one thing, I have the IP address of everyone that loaded my profile, and probably even this note. I can't map it to an npub, yet.

Because you run a relay, or does your client give you that?

I host my profile picture and nip05 verification myself. So I can see when user's load it.

So your profile pic is a script? Sneaky and neat, I love it 😄 also hosting my NIP but it's a service so am a good citizen and don't log anything

No I'm not that evil, I haven't been driven to do anything like that yet. It's just a picture. I'm just saying if I wanted to I could log those IPs just like you do with nip05. I also don't log until there are issues like ddos. Which happens on occasion.

All good, I didn't intend to accuse you 🫂

I just thought it's a neat idea.

And just to be clear: my nip-05 service isn't logging anything on my side. maybe Microsoft does because it's hosted on GitHub but even then I wouldn't know.

I'm sure they are and every proxy service in between, likely Cloudflare too. I'd rather you log it and not Microsoft.

Fair enough, me too actually. But knowing my provider self-hosting a service for actual people isn't possible. Thank you 🇩🇪 👿
