OK Google! ...any last words?

I'm about to rescue my mother in law from the belly of the beast and unlink her phone from the Matrix.

Any drawbacks with this?

No drawbacks. Banking apps, WhatsApp, Facebook, all the funny stuff still works if you need it but it's now sandboxed. GrapheneOS is built on Android 13 and you get regular security updates OTA.

Thank you, I will check it out. Zap incoming

Thank you 🙏 You find all you need here:

My family uses it for around two years, even before sandboxed playstore was available and still great majority of apps worked with Aurora Store and F-Droid. No brainer. Good for her :)

Good man! Made the transition from iPhone to Graphene on a Pixel a year ago and not looked back.

Great! I guess it's time for me to do more stuff like this. One step at the time

Great! I guess it's time for me to do more like this. Moving slowly over here

If you have a Pixel, do it today. If not, check out if you phone is compatible with the next best thing, the privacy focused iodé custom rom build on LineageOS.

Only been using Graphene for a few months but absolutely love it so far

Um, and a huge thanks for the zap! Will pass it on ⚡💜

Best decision I ever made.

Love GrapheneOS!

I'm out of Google for so long I had no idea how 'protective' their data silos have become. Simply login and download stuff? Get stuffed:

I installed GrapheneOS, the few apps she needs, and finally was about to download contacts and the WhatsApp backup - from Google Drive, as simple local backups seem to be impossible now.

Little did I know Google doesn't allow simple logins with email and password anymore, it demands a confirmation from a device they already know, the un-degoogled (neologism lvl 9000) Pixel. That doesn't exist anymore, so I needed to load the Google App and original Play Store back into GrapheneOS and give them full permissions so Google can send their ping through the phone. That's a >1.5GB installation and it comes with the Voice Assistant spyware. Because I unsuccessfully tried to login 3 times, with correct password mind you, just trying different confirmation options and varying degrees of permissions, Google decided I need to wait "for a few hours" to try again. 3 hours penalty!

What did we learn?

Tread your departure from big tech like you would end a toxic relationship with a violent partner. Get everything out the apartment that you need, take everything from the accounts that is yours, take custody over everything you can get your hands on, get a new email, and then just disappear and you never come back.

Too bad it doesn't work for samsung 😥

Have a look at Iodé. I haven't used it myself but I'm sure you will find some tests and tutorials on YouTube:

Thanks. 🫡

Will give a try and let you know
