I've had some experience here with my local council.

The usual excuse is maintance and abuse. Grass is easier for one man to cut on a ride on mower and food plants could be used in anti social behaviour (yes seriously, they were worried tomatoes would be thrown at houses...).

My solution, which was to encourage the creation of community groups was shut down due to the fear of being sued over food poisoning.

We live in a weird society....

Never ask for permission lol.

Oh I don't.. every year I save seed from apples trees and sprout them. After growing on for two years I "dispose" of them in my municipality..

I reckon I've "disposed" of an orchards worth of fruit trees along woodland edges, city decorative plantings and link Road verges.. 😀

Yep, couldn’t agree more. There are so many arguments to their mindset, but none matter to them unless it’s matched with dollar signs. Simply a low-growing native flower patch that is allowed to reseed itself would be far more efficient and significantly less maintenance (if any at all), and it would benefit the local ecology.

Another idea is to privatize these strips of grass to small scale farms. Free maintenance for the city, profit for the farmer, and benefits local ecology and community.

Here’s to hoping minds change.
