I mainly end up hiring workaholics. This is a consequence of seeking passionate, smart people who love their work.

So as a manager I mainly find myself telling them to take more leave and asking pointed questions if I receive an email from them far outside hours in their TZ.

But it also means I model the behavior I want, which helps me regulate my own hours. I have youngish kids, and my wife has her own career, so I try to stick to my weekly work hours. And I broadcast that to my team.

I want to work with these people for a decade, so it's a marathon not a sprint.

Mission-focused builders ❤️

i think work should be a series of sprints and rests, taking advantage of inspiration when it hits. and dont forget to ring the bell(:

Every workaholic I know is a shallow person. Their work is an escape from themselves.

This is pretty profound imo

I really enjoy the problem solving aspect of software engineering. The process takes time, and can take a lot of trial and error. The solutions can also pop into your head at random times (even in a dream), so you need to write a PR / email in the moment.

There are some areas of workacolism I agree with, like pressure to release on time. I also have a young child and I work around to fit time with them their day, so end up working late in the evening instead.

At the end of the day, using your brain is healthy, some like to do puzzles, some like to build out lightning implementations.

Birds if a feather flock together.

Is hiring an issue you are hoping to get better at? I recommend the book "who - the A method for hiring" by Geoff Smart and Randy Street 😇

Sounds like good leadership to me
