No, by design. Otherwise we would need to use much more memory and disk to preload everything.

In my opinion this is a bad tradeoff. Can users do anything to make it less aggressive? I would wait a few minutes before using the app if it meant this wasn't going to happen.

How much lag are you seeing between messages? Loading should be really fast these days. It's practically unnoticeable. And when it loads, there are animations to expand of reposition each note, image or video.

It was pretty bad but the problem is fixed after I connected to more relays. I wasn't connected to the default list. Does that make sense?

Yep. The experience in Nostr is extremely dependent on how good your relay selection is.
