because the VPN provider itself can't even see your activity unlike all other VPNs

apple private relay uses the same tech

My Mullvad subscription is about to expire, so that's good. But why don't you personally use a VPN?

because hiding your IP doens't really do much. I think blocking trackers via DNS is much more useful. I only use VPN if I need to access my machines remotely or something. when I need to do that I use wireguard.

And you are being fingerprinted in so many other ways, that that probably won't stop them either sadly.

Using a VPN can be no worse than your ISP. Your ISP sends you a "privacy policy" that lists all the ways they violate your privacy. A VPN claims to protect your privacy. You are guaranteed to be violated by your ISP because they told you they would. In the worst case, your VPN would act like your ISP except against their own advertising and their own interests. You share an IP address with others. You can control whether you want to exit here or there at any time. Your protection with a VPN is not perfect, but it's a damn good step in the right direction.

Mullvad as obscura exit nodes is icing on the cake 🤌

How is that even possible?

It’s two hop onion routing over QUIC. The tech is called MASQUE

I looked through their FAQs for speeds but didn't see anything... guess they would be pretty high since they are running the onion servers and all??

You might wanna read Harry Halpin's analysis. Knowing Harry quite well, he isnt right on everything, but he does have some good experience.

Thank you

I mean he is building a competing thing, which is really cool but also insanely slow.

He’s not technically wrong, but two hop is still way better and more performant than his idealized solution.

Someone should also ask Harry how preminig a token is improving the privacy and security model of the Nym network.
