What kind of service would you expect from a paid relay?
Discussion
Well above and beyond free ones.
Or
The services needs to roll costs and hide the relay complexities.
The second more likely.

That’s a good question, I’ve been thinking about this lately. I began to think maybe the answer is upside down just like the internet is being turned upside down. Maybe the answer is in the view component verifying access kind of like a checksum distributed ledger for view capabilities and the ability to have a rev share on multiple levels including the front end component level and back end and other party in the agreement.
I think there could be specific relays that act in the same way as major apps do today except instead of feeding you advertisements you would pay for a relay "subscription". Netflix-like relay, breaking news. People pay a lot of money to Bloomberg simply for their immediate news coverage.
Relays would become very similar to the current social media companies but there would be meritocracy and low barriers of entry.

Might be a good example of some content that a paid relay would provide.
Hopefully a service that I'm willing to pay only because I don't want to self host, but could easily do if I had the hardware.
Maybe to ensure I get all nostr notes related to a few topics.
Latency - the big ones are slooooow. Just look at the response time. Maybe they are too far. Local relays collecting a specific interest would help to find out about other's. An example: irish banana farmers relay. Small, local, responsive.
Migrating your data to the relay is my another idea. Having your past notes and stuff on a safe place is a priority.
Archival storage
and maybe being able to let my wot benefit too.
