If you want to understand censorship then just think of it like an in person conversation:

• Me and you are talking... you are being a belligerent asshat and screaming at me. I walk away or shut the door so I don't have to listen to you anymore. [mute/block]

––– not censorship. I have no olbigation to listen to your bullshit.

• Me and you are talking... we want to have a conversation about something controversial but we are at a dinner party in someone else's house. They ask us to leave. [banned from relay]

––– not technically censorship, but getting into an area where an outside party is controlling the conversation. Unfortunately the architecture of the internet makes this an increasingly difficult grey area.

• Me and you are talking... 10s of millions of people have all gone to the same "house" with millions of conversations & where each person explicitly chooses to receive messages and posts from a self-curated list of people. The state, funded by all of us and external both to any and all conversations being had, plus not an owner or stake holder in the house, threatens the host with shutting it down or fines if they do not put tape over our mouths so we cannot speak... specifically we cannot speak about how corrupt this external party is. [Social media censorship]

––– this is censorship. This is a problem. And this is why #Nostr exists

If you are moaning about someone blocking or muting you, then cry harder. 😁

Shadow-banning made popular by TWTR is a form of censorship. Technically you are not banned but You can yell all you want but no one will hear you.

shadow banning here would require everyone muting you

Of course, the last one also applies to oligarchs like Elon. And while it’s a “private” organization, it’s become a public square.

Well said👏

And who doesn't like a good analogy?

who is moaning about being blocked?

most of the discussion right now is about SHARED blocklists not individual choice to block whomever you want (which no one is criticizing) so right posts about your right to block whomever you want are probably just irrelevant noise even if they aren't intentionally deceptive

having shared mutelists we should have tools to audit them, like for example change view to show evidence of things being muted and be able to reveal muted notes easily

I have argued they are bad in general but a high quality list isn't the worst thing in the world (you won't get a high quality list though)

public blocks would be good so we know if someone is not getting a message
