I was just walking on my usual trail when I heard some rustling branches a couple feet away. I kept walking casually, thinking it’s probably a deer.

Then I heard a loud grunt.

I know all the “black fight back” and what not but I was PETRIFIED. I got super hot and dizzy.

After the initial shock I slowly looked back to nostr:npub1cj8znuztfqkvq89pl8hceph0svvvqk0qay6nydgk9uyq7fhpfsgsqwrz4u who was about 20ft behind me and motioning to me not to run.

We began a brisk walk back to the car, the rustling moving parallel to us before abruptly stopping.

Hearts pounding, we made it home.

Moral of the story: be careful even on familiar trails, and be aware that sometimes you don’t respond how you think you might in a dangerous situation.

I would shite my big-boy knickers.

It’s funny cuz we’ve seen bears from the car but it’s so different being exposed like that!

You ever see that video of the cougars following the guy? Same shit, scary as fuck !

https://youtu.be/9Pg2CDCm34w

Bear encounters are intense. Glad you guys handled it well and made it back okay 🫂

Was my first! 🥵

💪🫂🫂

You need to carry a pistol. It's better have and not use. Than to need and not have.

That’s what I figured lol. Knife is not enough.

At the very least you scare them away by shooting. You dont want to kill them, just keep them at bay. Bear mace may be an alternative too.

Did you see what kind it was? I thought black bears were skiddish.

Skiddish or not that sound put the fear of god in me 🥹

Normally ... but when they are not, they are extremely dangerous. I understand black bears kill more people than brown bears.

you left the scene calmly so you didn't need to break out your mama bear whoop-ass

stay strapped out there 🤙

I second this.

At the very minimum: bear mace ready to deploy at an instant.

Level the playing field by projecting equal or greater power; otherwise, you'll be at a major disadvantage.

Thank God for the valuable lesson learned; it could have been much worse!

everyone I know who’s had to deploy bear mace under pressure has ended up spraying themselves or catching it in the wind 😂

9mm is my bear minimum. nostr:npub1hu3hdctm5nkzd8gslnyedfr5ddz3z547jqcl5j88g4fame2jd08qh6h8nh the new slimline glock48 is a great small tool that conceals well. can find them for like $475

I have a FOID card, I guess it’s time I use it 😅 thanks for the rec!

yea the g48 is my current fave. idk what foid is but you can also use this little document called the constitution 🫡 😂 goodluck!

Illinois doesn’t like the constitution.

It’s sad. I can’t barely sell guns to citizens of that state because of Chicago’s grip of their political system.

Current carry #g43. Building a P320 now.

niice & decked out 🤙

g48 has been my edc recently, great feel, accurate, slim, light

going to upgrade sights & trigger soon

If I was a dude, I don’t think I could ever holster a gun that close to my 🍆. I’d have to go for a hip holster.

fastest draw for me, definitely not for everyone

I’d just worry about a misfire

negligible probability

Guns just make me nervous. I’ve been working on it. But I’m not comfortable with them. I think there’s just a level at which I might never be.

I get that. It’s a tool, becomes familiar with practice, is useless without practice.

Takes a while for each one to really understand and get comfortable with it.

I think I have a more than healthy respect of what they’re capable. Even with proficiency I’m not sure I will or would want to achieve comfort.

the respect and understanding is super important for everyone’s safety. not for everyone 🙏

48 MOS 🤌

true, I’m a big irons guy but obviously ideal to have that optionality

When you are ready, my company mills slides/cuts for the optics. AND we accept bitcoin 🫡

never going alone again that’s for sure 😅

yea, I am on swivel walking & hiking, especially at dawn & dusk, & whenever my dog exploring outside.

Moreso for mountain lions tho, which are effectively invisible.

The key is really to train consistently for these situations and avoid venturing alone unarmed. Walker got you 🤙 Glad everyone is safu

😳

What a fascinating story.

Run Forrest Run!

Glad you guys are safe! Just wanted to share this article.. I hiked a lot before and after trying hiking strapped, and I love the latter even more.

Honestly now I’m too scared to go without some sort of defense. Maybe because it’s fresh and it’s never happened before in like 15 years of me walking this trail. Better safe than sorry I guess 😰

The moral of the story is totally true. We don’t really rise to the occasion. If we are practiced at a good response then maybe we do that, but we might also just freeze.. or find out we are crazy like that one lady that pushed the bear with cubs off the fence to protect her dogs 😂😂

Sounds like you guys did well though!

get a .45 then they will be scared, not you ... :-)

👀🙏

Holy shit 😶

Glad ya'll are alright 💜💜💜

He just wanted a belly rub 😞

This happened here last month, except on our property, 40 meters from the house. It definitely gets your attention.

Instant and deep feelings of vulnerability.

mmm, for me it solidified feeling ok about deciding to be armed a while back, which i previously had mixed feelings about.

YES. So humbling.

All the world is a jungle. Our intellectual advantage enables us only to construct illusions of safety

Only had one encounter at Yellowstone where I actually felt like I was being sized up. Ego-me had decided to forego the bear spray just the day before. Very humbling when it stood up. I carry bear spray now.

Bear spray is just as effective as a gun, easier to deal with and allowed on trails close to town/city. Get a holster and then it's available quick. Get a storage container for transporting the canister in a vehicle. Store outside the cabin if possible. You do not want that sucker accidently going off inside the vehicle. Practice with expired canisters. 😉

So scary! I’ve gone on a few ‘solo’ hikes with Mr E and thought to myself… what would I do if a bear was around this corner! But then I realize, E is usually singing, etc so I think the bears might be afraid of us. Lol Glad ya’ll are ok!

I was told never go on a hike without making noise. Talking, shaking keys, something. This was in mountain lion territory. Never had a close encounter on trail.

Did once end up between my cat and a hungry looking coyote. I think that coyote correctly assessed it would be 2 against 1 if it tried for a feline snack.

Bear spray and a situation appropriate firearm are never bad ideas.

Do you not carry a gun???
