Value is subjective. There are no irrational or wrong ways to use bitcoin.

If people desire digital collectibles as the global power structure tightens its grip on humanity, then that's on them so long as they're willing to pay the price (and I suspect in more than one way, over the long term).

That being said, ordinals are not great for *my* ends. I don't care how neat it is that there's a Doom clone on bitcoin. I'm not in it for the tech, I'm in it for the liberty.

HOWEVER

If there's a use for ordinals that pushes liberty in a positive direction, then that would align with my ends. For instance, #[0] posted a note yesterday saying someone inscribed the Yankee Boogle auto sear CAD file. It's a simple 3d printable drop-in part that'll make your AR style firearm shoot funny. Now those plans are forever accessible to anyone and that's pretty amazing.

Need to think about this more but for now we're gonna have to deal with lots of low effort grift. The worst thing we can do is immediately react via some change to bitcoin or have nodes start censoring.

Bitcoin will persist. After all, if bitcoin can't survive jpegs then it certainly can't survive a state level attack, and therefore isn't fit to exist.

People have always added arbitrary shit on chain. My problem is the witness discount on top of a 1MB limit.

The compromise to make the block limit bigger in 2017 was a mistake.

Agree on all points. But we're living with the consequences and we can only look forward.

We don't have too . Lowering the limit to 300kb is softforkable AND with the witness discount we can still have 2MB blocks.

The mistake is fixable

wait, how does that prevent people from bloating the chain?

You can't prevents that. We could prevent the amunt of data that can be stored with each block.

ah okay, and what would that protect, what would be the reasoning there

Limiting the size of the chain so people can still IBD 40 years from now

What are the cascading unintended consequences of that?

Also 1mb is plenty. They'll just stuff bitcoin full of .webp images or vectors lol.

My problem isnt whats being stuffed. My problem is with the amount of data thats being stuffed

Yeah I understand that and that's the part I don't like as well.

But the solution should be examined, reviewed, debated, and tested extremely thoroughly. Can't Elon musk the fix imo.

And even then we won't know if there are any unintended consequences that come from it in terms of how things play out in practice. Users will be users and the era of tiny blocks might introduce incentives or ways of using bitcoin that we can't anticipate.

It wouldn't be tiny blocks though. They would effectively be double from pre 2017.

How about them putting kiddy porn jpegs in everyone's download ?

Wouldn't that make it very easy for the government to label everyone with a node a pedophile and jail them?

Or is it stored in such a way it can not be deemed as such?

Unless youre viewing it throught the eyes of the ordinals protocol you cant see anytning.

So legally you think that should be save?

Wouldn't encrypted data that houses kiddy porn be illegal? I mean I can't view it but once I have the key I can.

I mean every illegal TX that has ever been made was validated with your node.

All sounds like an awfully grey area though.

And while you say validate, I'd say passthrough? 🤞

Id always thought it would be the miner that did the actual accounting.

Even then, I'm sure they can find a judge that knows fuck all about it and deems it as such.

Eventually these use cases will likely be pushed off due to transaction fees. In the meantime I suppose this is a boon to miners.

The 3D part accessibility is good for liberty, but I have to imagine there are easier ways to host that data in perpetuity.

I am on the fence, too. The other thing I am thinking about blockchain sync time and hardware to hold full ledger. How much faster is the size of that data growing now. Look at block size MB (yellow) since ordinals became popular:

Yeah it sucks and I don't like it. But we're here and we're reaping what has been sowed because we accepted changes to bitcoin in the past.

I think it comes down to "what is the use case of Bitcoin?" and if embedded jpegs are a part of that use case. Imo they certainly are not

Nobody determines that except for individual Bitcoin users

Of which I am one of many 🙂

*shoot as God intended
