If I wanted to open a channel do I need a specific reason to open it?
How do you determine who you want to open a lightning channel with?
Is it just the size they have?
Can you just send liquidity back and forth to your own channels?

You kinda hinted the answer. Choosing a peer to open channel with kinda depends on the reasons for opening a channel.
If you want to use you node and channel for sending and receiving sats you wanna open channels to well connected nodes
If you want to forward payments you need to use a bit of voodoo magic to figure out how to position your node in the great scheme of things
There are sink nodes - the ones that mostly receive sats (merchants, exchanges etc.) but the challenge is to figure out which nodes have good sending potential
And off course you can always rebalance channels by sending through one channel and receiving through another
I'm always second guessing myself
Since 2020 I've been only opening channels to either small biz I spend at or with frens ... It's a simple idea that had worked fine for me.
