I have some little student loans (about 31k) from more than a decade ago. I sometimes want to just pay it off to be done with it but I get a sick thrill out of watching it go to zero against my #Bitcoin stack.

I'm conflicted. I'm sure the humor and fun will wear off eventually.

Write a promissory note that says "I unconditionally promise to pay XXX department of education XXX amount on demand" then write "without recourse" underneath and sign it. Mail it in to the payment center and make sure the amount is the full balance

Why?

Its a payment in united states dollars

Negotiable instrument

I paid mine off and wish I didn't. Governments have literally been voted in for promising to pay it off... Don't be as stupid as I was.

I don't think you're stupid for it. You honored your commitment, regardless of all the bullshit that probably led up to you making it.

Make the best decision for your long term finances. If you can swing the payment, debt used to hold assets with a return rate higher than the interest is beneficial.

I sometimes include my sanity and time into the equation. For example, I'm considering not using an HSA next year. We use 3-5k annually, but it isn't worth the 25% tax benefit on that. Better to just 'lose money' in that case. Fortunately, I don't have to manually do anything to watch the student loans go to zero 😂

Avoiding paying taxes as much as possible is a moral imperative even if you are well enough off to afford it.

It isn't just that you save $1000 a year, 25% of $4k, it is another little dig against the beast. You don't matter alone. But times every nostr user that is a real number. At $5k annual that is $100 a month saved. I definitely get decent returns for my time.

I know how people feel about paper bitcoin, but FBTC in an HSA is a game changer financially and you steal back that tax money legally. It isn't my whole stack but it changes my families likelihood of getting crippled by a medical bill or needing to sell my self custody into a tax penalty by a lot.
