On a recent trip I lost my #AUStriches passport.

- $260 dollarydoos for the embassy to issue an emergency passport

- $8 dollarydoos for passport pics overseas

- $412 dollarydoos for new passport

- $300 dollarydoos for priority processing

- $22 dollarydoos for additional passport photos

In total $1,002 dollarydoos (US$630) to get a new passport.

Why the Embassy can issue an emergency passport and not just directly replace it is beyond me.

The passport photos I had taken overseas to get the Emergency passport were disallowed by AusPost (who the Gov have outsourced all applications to) despite meeting the criteria and being a week old - no the photos have to be taken in Australia..

That last bit pushed it to over a grand, to get a shitcoin passport replaced..

Auspost having to do it makes precisely zero sense.

Australia has unique specs for passport pics, the embassy sent me to a local photographer who does photos with those specs so it would be compliant for the emergency passport and then they get noped out on Australian soil despite being in my travel doc..

No point arguing that with a post office employee though, everyone is “just doing their jobs”

After the first refusal I was a bit paranoid, the lightning in the post office was crap, the lady barely tried… the pic was ok, I got the documents I needed.

The issue is not only with passports, it’s pretty much every photo ID in Aus.

Ugh, dealing with third parties is annoying. Try reaching out to the head honchos in the passport emission department instead of the third party.

Many years ago at Oktoberfest, AUS had a pop up embassy because so many Aussies would get drunk and lose their passports.
