Water filter (like a sawyer)

First aid kit

Knife

Flashlight

Ponchos

Paracord

Compass

Cash ($500+)

Battery pack for cellphones

Socks/sturdy footwear

Defensive sidearm

All of the above will fit in a ruck or duffel bag and can be carried

Optional but nice to have ready to load in the car and situationally dependent:

A days worth of water

FRS/HAM/VHF radios

GPS

Instant coffee/hot cocoa

Small alcohol stove and pot

5 gal gas can (not great to haul around inside a vehicle, but if it’s a mass evacuation you might need it)

Think about likely scenarios in an evacuation event. What if you run out of gas? How do you get yourself somewhere safe if you don’t have a vehicle? How long could that take and what would you need to walk 12 hours, or a few days?

It’s good to have some stuff in your car…when something happens you might not be home. A “get home bag”.

A few years ago we had a severe ice storm. It hit unexpectedly earlier than forecast. People were unable to get home because the roads were covered in an inch of solid ice. No amount of plowing or salt was going to touch that. It was 2 days before roads were drivable again. You lived in your car or walked 10 or 20 miles home in severe weather (and not on roads or sidewalks…you literally couldn’t walk on them) Think about your situation/climate/etc and particular scenarios that could happen and plan for that.
