Instagram started off hashtags as a way to filter content on the site when searching

Later twitter took over the idea but then search engines saw how popular they became

So search engines then used them to help filter messages from social sites in search engines

So in turns of hashtags the term is for social networks/media and search terms are for search engines so now in a way they are the same thing almost you just use # on social and without on search engines

Sp it's up to you but posts I want found better I use hashtags and general posts where is just an update or just chatting I don't bother

I remember using them a lot early on to expand who saw my notes. Now I don't really care anymore, but that early work did help build my network.

I don't follow any tags anymore, due to spam, however they might be useful still within 2+ degrees of follows rather than just follows. I think custom topic curated relays will reign here, perhaps with LLM assistance.

I follow many hashtags - otherwise, you get pretty siloed here and don't find new interesting profiles.

The search function is so good that you almost don’t need them. I think they can help a post on a specific topic expand to a general interest.

Like a post about selling wine on a bitcoin standard, could benefit from hashtag-circulareconomy or hashtag-acceptsBTC

Also as nostr grows it could help. AI might help suggest tags.
