I know your question is mostly rhetorical but the short answer is inertia.

When my iPhone dies I will switch over to pixel with graphene but that money has a lot of other uses in this moment (like buying Bitcoin or saving up for a family road trip).

If someone continues to support apple by buying their shit after showing their true colors then yes I agree.

Also a lot of us are not as tech literate as others on here, so I will probably opt for an Above phone that is ready to go and has support (but costs more as a result)

Would you say more about ready to go options? Graphene?

This is what I’m looking at

https://abovephone.com/devices/

I heard about this the other day. Can get a phone sent from Calyx with everything pre-loaded:

Personally, I picked up a used phone from someone I knew and flashed #GrapheneOS myself. Incredibly simple if you want to go the route of trusting Graphene’s site with the install.

Flashing it yourselfx as you did, really is quite simple. I actually direct new users to that route instead of buying a preflashed phone. Preflashed phones cost a fortune and aren't necessary for 99% of people

Which is one of the things that stood out to me regarding the Calyx Institute phones. Seemed a lot more reasonably priced than I was expecting.

Seems like a good option for my grandmother who hopped of the tech train with her vhs.

That's a fair reason. These things aren't cheap. But I still hope your phone dies immediately after reading this note 🤣
