Signal doesnβt let you register the app without phone numbers on iOS anymore.
Itβs getting worst, not better.

Trying to run signal on a second iPhone without a sim. No QR linking device anymore.
Pretty sure you could never run on two phones. You can run on a PC and a phone but never seen Signal running on two phones. It usually logs you out of the old phone when you set up a new one. The QR works just fine on the Linux version of setting up a second client on PC at least.
Just switched my number from this old iPhone 7S to a $99 Moto G Fast. Gonna leave that number as a work number, have a new number on my Pixel 6β¦ will never have another iPhone, but gonna run this one into the ground playing Fountain podcasts over my hotspot ππ
Try keet.io
I think Signal was never able to run without a phone number because the security is bound to it.
I have a phone number linked. Thatβs not the issue. They donβt let you register the device with qr anymore.
Iβm stuck on a loop. After the count it goes back to the count.
Okay, but that sounds more like a bug to me!
My iPad is also liked to my iPhone over qr and this works without problems π€
Years ago someone made an app in F-Droid app on Android called OpenSignal as an alternative client. Signal promptly contacted the developer and pressured him to remove it. Iβm not sure whatβs going on, but I have never trusted it.
Threema FTW
Yes itβs not ideal. Definitely concerning on the insistence by Signal to connect to your contacts as well.
If its en=to-end encrypted messaging and phone calls you are looking for, Converso works just fine.
There is so much potential in the direct messages of #nostr
Something tells me that they will evolve in a good way to start giving a good fight to the rest of the messaging applications.
Run

Threema works fine for me and my family.
Wait phone numbers have been optional at some point on iphone?
Session is the solution that I use. It derives from an earlier fork of Signal. Recommended. https://getsession.org/
No one is there.
Works for me my people I need to communicate privately with. Unlike complaining about signal phone number requirement; they will never change that
Session is really good!
Yeah, I like session for anything I really want to try keep private. It's a bit hit-and-miss, but certainly good enough.
I thought you've always needed a phone number. Even if it's a burner VoIP #.
If you build it, they will come
