Honestly I'm not sure it's correct to consider those people communists. Yes, the ideology was communist, but the practical actions were far from communism. Using the same Soviet Union as an example, it seems to me that communism ended under Lenin. The Stalin period is hard to evaluate because of the war, but anything after that is definitely not communism.
