Hey nostr, seeking advice 🙏

My brother is smart, thoughtful, and kind-hearted. He can also be a bit stubborn and _\\

He holds some Bitcoin, and is interested in it as an investment asset, but he’s not the type to be attracted to the whole financial revolution philosophy of it.

I made a comment in passing about how the media narratives about Bitcoin + global warming are problematic, and he quickly interjected “well, Bitcoin IS bad for the climate and that’s just a fact”…

I offered a couple of counter-examples, but felt myself getting triggered and knew I would not be effective at changing his perspective from an emotionally “hooked” state of consciousness.

We dropped the subject, but I’ve been thinking about it for the past hour. It’s important to me, and I want him to share even a glimpse of the hopefulness and enthusiasm I feel for how Bitcoin will change global energy production for the better.

But I can’t approach this from an attached (dare I say “triggered”) place, in myself.

Has anyone been through this kind of conversation before? With someone you love and respect?

I’m all ears and appreciate whatever advice you all might have👂🫂🫡

My go to is explaining geologic time and how that even if Bitcoin uses the power of a small country, inter-glacial periods like what we have now, can only hope to keep the planet warm

And that's why I don't usually go into it

People have no clue that if the earth was in an (inevitable) cooling phase humanity as we know it would be in serious jeopardy.

Ya and the thing is, we are well into what used to be Cool 😂

They have no clue what’s going on at all in any direction 😂

The facts are on #Bitcoin ‘s side.

Sounds like the sort of thing that you’re just going to talk past each other on. ‘Bad’ is a subjective term. He holds some which is good. Perhaps point him to the articles that nostr:npub1trr5r2nrpsk6xkjk5a7p6pfcryyt6yzsflwjmz6r7uj7lfkjxxtq78hdpu has written on the mining operations in Malawi. Other than that don’t force the issue.

Had a similar debate once. Asked them to consider the energy used by the current fiat global banking system and left it at that.

Weird this link isn’t opening into fountain and safari says not found 🤔

Hmm it opened in safari for me then I selected “open in fountain” and it worked?

Here’s the YouTube version though:

For some reason fountain links often say server not found when I open them on mobile. Wonder if it’s a vpn thing or idk 🤷‍♂️

anyway thank you for these 🙏

if he's open to consuming content made by Bitcoin content creators, then send him an article or podcast that you like that touches on the subject. Make sure you include a SHORT description on what you found interesting ("they interviewed this dude who was using excess hydropower for Bitcoin mining to help level power usage. I liked the part where he talks about how it impacted the local community"*) dont just send a link with no context.

if he's not open to consuming Bitcoin content, then just leave him be. maybe send him some memes that reflect the common ground that you guys share about Bitcoin. maybe it's about how it's a better money or the price or how inflation is wild.

Meet him where he's at. He's your brother first. He doesn't need to see it your way right now. Stay humble.

*I just made this up. not sure if there's an actual podcast about this

This is wise! And there are definitely podcasts about exactly that 😂 thanks Karo 🫂

Maybe just ask him questions about it? Ask him to explain how it is bad. Based on his answers ask more questions. Maybe ask who benefits from telling us bitcoin is bad. Don't linger on the subject, plant that seed, then move on for now.

Thank you - good advice 🤝

Would it be worth sitting down and figuring what energy uses would he allow if he was in power? Hospitals? Ice rinks? Street lights?

It was less about the usefulness or control of a particular activity, and more about the source of energy and financial incentives, but there are many good arguments for this direction as well

Watch this your self for ideas, then share it with him

Nice find 🤜🤛

Ooh that’s a great one. Thanks Mark!
