Just made this simple diagram to explain how free & paid relays work. You can see the trade-offs of using only free relays: less discoverabilities by others, and a completely useless global feed. At the very least, you should add global feeds from paid relays (they are still free to read), so that you can discover other content. If you want other people to discover your content (people who don't follow you directly), you should pay for at least one popular P2W relay.

Zaps are fine ⚡

I don’t see a lightning icon for you 🤷‍♀️

Weird. My LN address is maxmoney@nostrplebs.com. 🤙

Do you see it as published on your profile?

Yes, my zaps are set up and working. Not sure what the issue is, no biggy!

😉

Received, thanks 🙏

Thanks so much for the explanation...🙏

I've been wanting to understand this in order to form an action plan and be able to advise others.

So, would simply adding a reputable paid relay be a good start?😁

Oh, and if I secure a paid relay, can I access it from whatever client I might be using at the time?😮❓

Yep. When you add a relay, you should have a button or option to post/broadcast your relays list. The list will be saved on your relays, so that when you log in from another client you will actually load your own relay list. Relay-ception.

Thanks for the additional guidance.🙏😁

It doesn’t work on the regular Damus version (not TestFlight), does it?

Might be useful to go along with your nostr tutorials: #[1]

discoverability*

nice - what u essentially saying - people who want their NOTES to more POPULAR and well distributed should subscribe to more onetime PAID relays and also use FREE ones

Yeah it's about discoverability (both directions - you finding others and others finding you).

Would you mind if I used (or recreated) this diagram for Nostr.how? I'm starting to work on some more visuals to help people understand how the protocol & network fits together.

Consider it public domain.

Thanks for sharing the diagram.

“Bob sees Alice's notes from Relay 2

because he follows her directly, but he wouldn't be able to discover her content without following her.”

Have I got that right ?Bob followed Alice, Bob can see her notes even if he don't add relay2 ? 🤔

No, Bob reads Alice's notes from relay 2. He does not read the global feed from relay 2, only the follow feed. But since he follows, he will see them.

I’m also confused by this.

Maybe the wording could be better. Bob follows Alice. By doing that, when Bob reads from Relay 2, Bob will get Alice's posts. Otherwise, Bob does not read any content from Relay 2, because he assumes that the global feed (accounts he does not follow) is full of spam.

“Follow” just means that you will ask a relay for this npub's posts directly, because you trust them to not be spam.

Look at this:“What happens if I'm not connected to the same relays someone else is? You won't be able to communicate with that person. ”

i get that:in order to see each other's events, they must add at least one shared relay?🤔

Reference:https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nostr

Yes you need at least one shared relay. In the example, Alice and Bob share Relay 2. I didn't draw the lines, but Chad could share Relay 2 as well, he still wouldn't be able to see Alice unless he follows her npub explicitly.

Bob and Chad have 2 shared relays, but Bob writes to R3 and reads Chad's posts from R4. Chad writes to R4 and reads Bob's posts from R3.

Appreciate it. Any actionable steps to configure the relay settings on Amethyst?

I gather the 3 rightmost knobs must be to receive DMs, follows feed and global feed, respectively. Not sure about the first one (homepage symbol).

The 3rd one is "public rooms" feed, which should be treated as spammy (like global).

Ah k, then the first one must be the follow feed.

Thanks for the effort - very easy to understand! ⚡️🫂⚡️ (had to copy address from your other post cause I don’t see it in your profile) - keep up the good work mate ❤️🤝

Free vs. Paid relay explainer in 1 diagram.

Had some comments about the first version where wording could have been more clear, so here is v2, hopefully it's a bit better:

Я понял... это здорово)))

В будущем обучать ИИ на новых данных станет невозможно так как все новые данные будут в реле.

обучить свой ИИ станет также дорого как и подключатся к этуму реле.

Спасибо мой друг. сделаю подключения сейчас пока цена не стала очень огромной.
