The Norwegian tax system feels like a maze designed to drain ambition. It doesn’t just punish hard work and innovation—it traps us with exit taxes, making it nearly impossible to move forward or even step away.

Same in the U.S.

That’s terrible!

Aren't you taxed for ever, anywhere in the galaxy, when you are/had been an US citizen?

Yeah, unless you renounce, and then you have to pay something like 30% exit tax.

Ahhh... There is an exit "possible". But it only makes sense when you are poor.

Here in Canada, I believe that an exit tax has already been applied to those who renounce Canadian citizenship.

Having to pay to leave a country is so fucking dumb.

😞

That's called robbery

That’s definitely what it is!

How does the exit tax works?

The Norwegian exit tax is a tax imposed on individuals who move out of Norway and own shares or other financial assets with unrealized capital gains. If a person has held tax residency in Norway for at least five of the past ten years before moving, they are subject to this tax.

When leaving, Norway taxes the unrealized gains on these assets as though they were sold at the time of departure, meaning they must pay tax on the hypothetical profit, even though they haven’t actually sold anything. However, there’s often a deferral option, allowing payment to be postponed under specific conditions. The exit tax is designed to prevent tax avoidance by taxing gains that would otherwise escape Norwegian tax jurisdiction.

That is crazy. Those people are sick

Agree

i've been in more than a few abusive relationships but governments really top the list

bulgarian government never paid me back any EU VAT on work related expenses when i registered a corporation 2 years ago and then expect me to pay 1000 euros to shut down the corporation

i just left, never going back

if it's really impossible to avoid paying direct taxes with an administrative burden on you, it's best to leave

It’s not that easy for me, but its definitely tempting to just leave. Good to hear you got out 😊

yeah for me it was 12 years trying to start a business and just having so many obstructions to being able to become viable

Boy I hate to see that...having your own business is really one of the best ways to achieve success.

I'd normally say "move to the US" but given our current government, I'm not sure that's really an answer--we're headed down the same road.

Maybe another country? El Salvador?

Seriously--time to get out...no country is worth losing your spirit of ambition and achievement...

I agree with you.

El Salvador is tempting me 🇸🇻

i hope to go to the midwest, up in the mountains, and just stay off the radar, i mean it can't be that hard right? with millions of losers being shipped in across the southern border

i'm doing ok here in the edge of the EU in this same way... it's a lot harder for them to enforce it in such rugged terrain and relatively sparse population... customs is a killer though, absolute nightmare and extremely high import duties

Well, I'd consider doing it legally...(which can be a pain)...if you're here illegally you'll likely run into trouble trying to start your own business...(if you want to work as an unskilled laborer under the table you'll probably be fine, but I suspect that's not your plan 😃 )

yeah, i'm just going to live somewhere small enough that it's not a pain

i work remotely anyhow... i seriously doubt the IRS is doorknocking in buttfuck idaho, or whatever small place i land (preferably under 10k people)

Did you make it after you moved out?

in australia i tried thousands of times to get jobs and crickets

in Bulgaria before 2 weeks of trying i'm doing my first training shift

to be fair, western europe sucks too, it was only in the balkans that i found things more reasonable... so-called "corrupt" countries lol

these days i mostly work remotely, and try to avoid getting into arrangements involving taxation... current main paid gig i don't have any binds to the local authorities and i get paid in sats, company is based in USA, so i guess they might be paying the IRS on my behalf

i had to do some registration rigmerole for a job back in 2021 and that shit turned into a huge waste of time and zero tax back for my actual business expenses

It’s not so easy to just pick up and leave when you have a well-paying job, a home, and a family with school and friends rooted where we live now.

I really admire those who take that leap—all respect to them. But I’ll have to wait until the kids are older before we can make that move.

For now, I’m keeping my Bitcoin in cold storage, ready for the day when it’s finally possible for us to go.

being childless in middle age is nothing to envy, nor is my plague of health

the only thing that is going right for me is i'm good enough at programming to be able to get work and deliver on the spec

if i get lucky enough to find a wife where i go next, then, well, ok, but i played a long game and didn't have fun getting there

the one thing that i am very grateful for is to not be stuck in a position where i have to figure out how to not have the state brainwash my children, that really disturbs me... i had a really bad time at school and i wouldn't wish that on my own children, and it's worse now than it was then

I wish you the best brother 🫂

💯

And there again is the question: where are the Bitcoin? Every sat is on every node all around the world, it's international already. (ok, most nodes are in the US and Germany 😅).

Every node holds all the Bitcoin in the world. Still, increasing the number of nodes will not inflate Bitcoin. Burning nodes will not burn Bitcoins. 🤯😉

But wait a minute: if you look at these nodes closely, there are no bitcoins on them. Only a list that says that some Bitcoin went from, to some addresses. No Bitcoin at all. There are no Bitcoins! Completely imaginary Magic Internet Money.

It's almost the same like FIAT or gold - but different.

You can prove the existence of Bitcoins mathematically but never touch them. 😵‍💫

(I have a longer list of thoughts like that 🙃)

Maybe next step in fighting Bitcoin will be to label running a node as a financial service only ppl with a license are allowed to do. (In this case I'm happy to announce that not me but a friend runs a node behind tor, and nobody knows where it's located.)

This is so horrible. It's like the U.S. tax regime on steroids. I am glad we at least don't have a general wealth tax yet.
