Downloaded and started using it last night on both my Unbrel Home and RPi nodes.

I will be using ā€œFilesā€ to storage stuff in my own cloud which I had attempted to do twice before with Nextcloud with catastrophic results.

When I say Catastrophic, I had backups, all was good šŸ˜‚ nostr:note15m3zzzl8vacmxq8c7l9ay72h8cryv0l5m9re39r0j8zym6c6q3sqq9grj3

Add syncthing to it to maximise your backups

Actually Nextcloud did syncing, I didn’t like that. I want remote storage mounted on my Mac’s.

I generally do backup by manual replication.

All your devices backed up each time you reach your home network. Works like a charm.

There night be alternatives for Apple users.

Are you on commission?

You're not taking "NO" for an answer šŸ˜‚

After a few "catastrophiques" failure, I've became a maniac with backups šŸ˜…

Looks interesting. What happens if something happens to the storage (fire, flood, etc). This seems risky unless if there’s some other redundancies built in?

My two Umbrel nodes sit on two different Islands which is separate to where I live.

I also do backup by replication to another NAS I have in another part of the world.

Yeah, it seems like the way to go to make this work.

What I specifically like about Umbrel files is the ability to remote mount media for access.

This is not the same as building a robust self hosted cloud solution, which is also possible, but with more complexity.

I love that. Problem I have that I have wanted to solve using Plex but didn’t want to pay too much for. 🤣 How does this work on the client side? Browser?

On Mac, it is simply "Connect to Server" from from the Finder menu:

So if I wanted to watch something on say, my Xbox, I’d go through a file tree?

This is just file mounting.

"Watching on Xbox" i.e. streaming has a whole different set of tools and protocols.

On Umbrel, they are apps like these, I have no experience using them:

Will study on Monday! Got me intrigued!

I lost all my Documents folder data trying to storage it on Nextcloud... a bit catastrophic too 🫠

Oh shame … been looking at NextCloud too.
