High end Lenovo laptop, brand new. Right speaker blew within two weeks. Just died.
Finally got around to buying replacements. This is what they look like. The new ones.
Lenovo is a shit coin people.

Quality of all things is getting worse as the price goes up. It’s ridiculous the affect inflation has on quality. Companies shaving where ever they can to save a few buck bucks
Yeah. This lines up with my experience as well.
I bought a brand new NUC. It would power off randomly. Went thru all the things with intel even replaced power supply. No go. They replaced unit. Second unit also defective. In the end I requested money back which they did. I will say customer support was next level good. Amazing in today’s world actually. I initially bought nuc as I thought the quality was supposed to be better. Turns out not so much.
Similar experience. Definitely better with beelink now which surprised me. And being able to fit an additional hdd inside is a neat feature.
We gotta order custom made at this point. No brand name crap.
What about guarantee?
Lead time on the laptop at the time was three months. I couldn’t go without again at that time, and now it’s just been put off.
I really didn’t mind paying for the part. But two bad experiences separated by almost a year like this - both apparently Q/A issues…
I’ll try to carefully peel the glue and seal stuck directly to the speaker diaphragm and make it work. Just not the experience I’d have expected from a laptop that cost as much as two MacBooks.
True. There was a time when ThinkPads were real work horses. They just wouldn't break, and if they did, you could easily repair them by yourself. Seems these days are gone... 🤷
Yeah, I miss those days ...
They're not gone - I've hodled mine and keep repairing it. Cold, dead hands and all that :-p
The "bathtub curve" is real, but the early lenovo Thinkpads bathtub must have been designed for an anaconda.
Of course, I need to do sillier and sillier optimisations to make a modern browser run on it acceptably, but stories like this one remind me of why!
Rough
Yikes.
i disagree that lenovo is a shitcoin. but do i hate to hear about this. i would send them back. i've experienced net good things with the two times i had to use my lenovo on-site support. never had a new replacement part come in looking like that. your high-end lenovo should be under warranty. do you not have on-site support?
I will concede that my experience is totally anecdotal. Two identical laptops (custom spec) were ordered at work. One for me, one for my boss. Both are presenting issues of various types. It could also be the model is just bad. The model in question is the P1 Gen 5 which was new at the time of purchase. Again, I let the warranty expire because this was a work laptop I could not afford to send in. We did not get on site support, assuming similar to the dozens of IBM’s we’ve owned it would not be needed, and we’re all fairly handy with hardware in a pinch.
Nothing else has broken on mine - any other gripes I have were over Lenovo claiming Linux support for a laptop that did not have mainlined drivers until nearly six months later. Things like that are not related to build quality though.
It can make one really irate when they have a 20 core Intel i7-12800H, 32GB of RAM, 2 TB of disk space, and a workstation class A2000 graphics card, and can’t run virtual machines worth a crap because there’s an EFI bug where Intel virtualization does not enable even when switched on.
The speakers showing up like this were my last straw. When this retires (hopefully not too soon) I’ll probably pursue a Framework.
On the other hand, I was able to use solvent to loosen the glue on the seals, let it reset, and did the surgery. Speakers work for now. Total elapsed time <20 minutes. I’ve calmed down some now. 🫂
i hear ya. love lenovo though if anything qubes-os has taught me, it's that newer is not always better. also love the t420, t460, t480 etc they are workhorses and their keyboards are the best laptop keyboards ever imo
Yikes
