I’m currently playing Hammershlagen with a bunch of Romanians who escaped communism and I joked “you have to say the best thing Ceaușescu did as you hit it,” and without missing a beat the first person to swing the hammer said “he died.”

The serious answer would be that he had gotten the country out of all its debts, of course sacrificing the population.
Anyway, communism didn't fall in 1989, it continued under a different form and leadership.
Tell them not to return to the country because nothing has changed.
The communists are still in power, and running the country.

I ask as a Romanian living in Romania, their age can explain a lot of things...
People from Eastern European countries are kind of immune to Tyranny and communism. Young people in the West are naive and/or stupid because their parents did not teach them enough about communism and history.
Tyranny can be wrapped in "democratic elections" and "capitalism". Look at Putin's Russia.
